If they go for a young Ariel, and they make her a good character, rather than an evil one like they seem to be going for with Peter Pan, I could see her as a possible puppy love interest for Henry. Henry’s getting to that age now where he’s going to start taking an interest in girls, there were hints of it with Ava/Gretel and Paige/Grace in season 1. With Ariel being a mermaid, it limits the relationship to a very innocent thing that can’t go much further than perhaps hand holding. Also when it comes to the time where Henry has to leave Neverland, if Ariel can’t leave too, then it provides Henry with his first heartbreak and perhaps Charming or Regina trying to console him with the “it’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all” saying. A puppy love relationship would also mark the beginning of Henry’s transition from childhood towards adulthood. It would also be a nice irony if Henry grew up emotionally in Neverland since it is the land where you don’t grow old.

Keeper of FelixJuly 1, 2013 at 6:32 pm #199016JosephineParticipantI still want Ariel, no matter who she’s paired with, to be post-The Little Mermaid. I really want it to stick to Anderson’s ending. It’s much more interesting and dramatic and would fit with the tone of Once much better than her happy ending of living with her Prince.
So far all the fairytales that we know have already happened. We don’t have the real story in our world, but somehow some version of the tales seeped into our collective consciousness in this world. I would be very surprised if they went a pre-The Little Mermaid version of Ariel where she’s still only 16 since they’ve not done that with any other up to this point.
Based on just little things getting leaked, I’ll be surprised if Ariel is introduced in the first half of the season. Maybe at the end as they’re leaving on the boat she’ll make her first appearance, but I don’t think with all the other storylines going on that they’ll introduce her just yet.

If they do go young then a relationship with Hook would be a big no. If they go older then they will lose Ariel’s innocence and curiosity about humans since she should be old enough to know better.
I think they can age her up to 20ish without losing the innocence and curiosity if she’s been living under the thumb of an overly protective father. 21 is a standard “coming of age” type age, so it would be the perfect age for her to be wanting to rebel and gain her freedom and going to drastic measures like making deals with sea witches.
I actually think it would make her more compelling as a character, because she’d be a young adult striving for her independence and dreams at any cost, as opposed to a rebellious teen making potentially foolish life choices. A 21 year old telling her father that she’s old enough to make her own life choices can be taken more seriously than a 16 year old can be. I love me some “Little Mermaid”, and think that she works just fine as a 16 year old in Disney animation with a sweet, happy ending, but for OUAT I think she could do with a little more oomph and a little more age to fit in with the overall feel of the show.
Characters on this show have to pay for the choices they make. In Anderson’s version, the mermaid paid with her life when things didn’t work out how she’d anticipated. I can see K&H wanting to make Ariel suffer some consequences for her majorly life altering choice, (though I hope she still eventually gets a happy ending). Let’s not forget that in the Onceiverse, magic always comes with a price!

Agreed. My headcanon has her as human in the present day, and we’ll see the story of how she got that way in flashback. Like you say, with all the other characters, the story we know has already happened, so it would be odd for them to tackle this one differently.
July 3, 2013 at 11:07 am #199303kfchimeraParticipantWell, for the other stories it was sort of done pre-Emma breaking the curse, so it all made sense to see the contrast between “realworld” Aka Storybook and full on enchanted forest selves. Most of the Season 2 characters did not fit that pattern–Hook, Cora, MAP have no Storybook counterparts. Even the minor ones who were in Storybooke like Sheriff and Smee, we didn’t learn much of their daily identity–it seems like that plot device is just done.
So when we get Ariel, it could be we will have her in the past or the present, but I am not sure they will bother with “storybook” Ariel exactly.
I could see young Ariel as a crush for Henry, but I think it would play better in a year or two for Henry, and I want Ariel on the show now! I think an older Ariel is easier for them to do in terms of making a character that has a longer story arc.
While some people feel “our cast is set”–I’ve watched enough shows where some of my favorite characters did not show up until the middle or end of the series. New characters with major storylines they introduce can really help keep a show fresh. I think Ariel could be that type of character. Plus, with Ory leaving, they sort of have a gap open for a “friend” character. I think Emma could use a BFF friend of her own, besides her mother or mother’s friends.

I hope so! With any luck, the fact that they’ve held off on introducing her thus far means they want to give her a significant role in the future and have to wait for just the right time to introduce her.

That’s a good point. MM was the closest thing she had to a girlfriend…and MM ended up being her mother. Red was Snow’s BFF before Emma met her. She’s had no emotional connection with Belle, so they’d be pretty much starting from scratch if they wanted to develop a friendship there, and that might feel a bit forced, given that they haven’t shown any interest in being friends thus far.
Ariel could fill the role quite nicely though, especially if they all meet her and get to know her for the first time in S3. My headcanon has the CS relationship ultimately being close friends. Make Ariel the true love of Emma’s BFF and it’s a natural progression that she and Emma become close friends too. Man, now I have visions of Emma trying to get Hookriel together…Ariel’s clueless about men and Killian thinks he doesn’t deserve happiness and Emma plays matchmaker so the two crazy kids can get it together. 😉
July 3, 2013 at 11:43 am #199320RumplesGirlKeymasterI’m with Phee on this. I think Emma and Hook are going to become best best best friends. And I think that opens the door for Ariel.

It’d be interesting for Hook to have a BFF who’s female. Judging by what we’ve seen, he’s never met a woman he considered just a friend. Would show some real growth in his character if he could have an emotionally close relationship with a woman without it inevitably being sexual. I’ve always maintained that if they DO go there with CS, I’ll be able to buy it because Colin and JMo do have chemistry and the characters do share an emotional connection. But I think their relationship could be equally as rewarding for them as individuals if it’s platonic. And now I’m getting all attached to the idea of Emma and Ariel being close gal pals to add to the little group of friends.
If I could write fanfic, I’d SO be writing a Hookriel/SwanFire double date story right now. 😉
July 5, 2013 at 12:07 pm #199566JosephineParticipantMy SwanFire heart cheers a little at Emma being just friends with Hook. But then I’m a sucker anyway for male/female platonic friendships. Too many shows have had this storyline only to have the best friend characters sleep with each other and it turn into a romantic pairing. It’s not always bad, and often I’m cheering for it, but not everything has to be romantic. But then I have the same feeling about SwanQueen. Lana and JMo do have chemistry in their scenes, but why does it have to be sexual? Haven’t you ever met someone you either hit it off with or just rubbed the wrong way and sparks flew but it never went anywhere in that way? It’s what makes life interesting.
I still want to see Ariel living with the life choices she made. All magic comes with a price and I think her price might be something that doesn’t have the happily ever after ending that Disney gave her.

July 18, 2013 at 11:30 am #200656PheeParticipantPotC: On Stranger Tides was on here tonight, and of course I had to watch it, not just because those movies are so fun, but I’m being all obsessive about mermaids and pirates these days. 😛
Anyway, of course the little love story between the human (Philip) and the mermaid (Syrena) got me pondering Hookriel, and not that I expect them to lift ideas from the PotC movies, but if they lifted this particular theme, I wouldn’t be mad…
Philip and Syrena’s “thing” is “you are different,” (for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, basically, mermaids are dangerous, murderous beasts who launch a frenzied attack on humans, and Philip is a Christian missionary who has ended up travelling around in the company of pirates who take Syrena captive). They each say it to the other at some point.
Philip: Such beauty, surely you are one of God’s own creations. And yet deadly.
Syrena: Deadly? No.
Philip: You attacked me.
Syrena: No. You are different.
Philip: Different?
Syrena: You protect.
Philip: *realising what actually happened* You pushed me down out of the way.And then my brain went off on this whole tangent about how Ariel was spying and overheard Hook’s conversations with Bae, and saw how despite his inner conflict, what he’d truly wanted to do was to protect him. So then at a later date, Hook ends up in the water somehow, and Ariel’s sisters are flocking in to attack, and then in swoops Ariel to save him, because she knows he’s different to the other humans in NL who the mermaids usually go after if they get the chance, humans who imprison children.
And it’d be so utterly romantic because it would mean that Ariel had seen the good in him all those years ago, even though he couldn’t see it himself, but now he’s finally trying to make a true effort to change, and when they get together in present day, she can be all, “I’ve always believed in your good heart,” and we can all be overcome with FEELS because of their perfectness and how some things are worth waiting for, even if you have to wait 100s of years.
Anyway, back to the movie and there’s a later scene where Syrena’s been tied up for ages and Philip comes to set her free.
Syrena: You came for me. Why?
Philip: You are different. Are you not? Do you know not of kindness, compassion? And I imagined Hook saying something similar to Ariel after he discovers she’s the exception to the rule about mermaids being evil and dangerous, because she saved him.
So basically, I spent half the movie being distracted by potential Hookriel FEELS and had one of those moments where I felt like the potential is so perfect that I might just cry if this crackship doesn’t end up as canon, and I had to get it out of my system by posting this. *sigh*
July 18, 2013 at 11:59 am #200660kfchimeraParticipantLol Phee. You make me want to watch that movie now. I stopped with that series after the third one. Even though I would be happily shocked if this crack ship came to pass, it would be fun just to see A&E’s reaction. I know….No spoliers, keep hope etc…so maybe their reaction would not be so funny.
