What if the Mad Hatter is actually Rumpelstiltskin’s son? Out of all of the characters on this show, the Mad Hatter is the only one who qualifies as someone crazy enough to be Rumpel’s son. Maybe Bae’s time with His father after he became the Dark One drove him insane and he became the Mad Hatter? 😮 😮 😮

    Here are my reasons:

-For one, I was shocked to see that the show would be featuring the actual Mad Hatter. I was 99.999% convinced that Rumpelstiltskin would be filling the role, as he had done in “The Price of Gold” as Cinderella’s fairy god-mother and in “Skin Deep” as the Beast. So, the fact that the show required that the real Mad Hatter be featured is very significant.

    Now, on to my evidence:
-In “Skin Deep,” when talking to Belle about his son, he only said that he “lost him.” That could mean absolutely anything. He could have died, he could have ran away, he could have shunned his father after he became the Dark One. It was never explicitly stated that his son actually died.
-It was recently revealed in the official synopsis for episode 3×17 “Hat Trick,” that the Mad Hatter is a man of magic. That means that he is probably able to prolong his lifespan, just like Rumpelstiltskin. So, this new development puts his story within a reasonable timeline of that of Rumpelstiltskin’s. He could be 300 years old for all we know.
-After Rumpelstiltskin became the Dark One, it’s reasonable to assume that he and Bae spent plenty of time together thereafter. And after seeing what his father had become, the treatment he was probably subjected to, and the fact that Rumpelstiltskin went insane himself, probably turned Bae into a Mad Hatter.
-There are also spoilers that the Mad Hatter’s Storybrook counterpart is a neglectful father and is longing to reconnect with his daughter. This parallels Rumpelstiltskin’s sorrow over the supposed “loss” of his son. Maybe the Mad Hatter is repeating the same neglectful behavior.
-The Mad Hatter is not his actual name. The name “Mad Hatter” is actual a description of someone, and implies that this name was given to him after a history of strange and psychotic behavior. Very similar to that of Rumpelstiltskin. So, the fact that the show is referring to him by his nickname tells us that his real name is being hidden for reasons unknown. This also parallels’ Rumpelstiltskin’s title (or nickname), The Dark One, a name that as given to him, not born with.
-And top of that, the Mad Hatter will be officially introduced in episode 1×17, but maybe his true identity isn’t revealed until episode 1×19, the episode where the relationship between Rumpel and his son is finally revealed.

I think the hatter is too young to be Rumpel’s son.

^Hmm…good point. Unless, knowing Rumpelstiltskin’s phobia of losing his son, maybe he gave Bae some of his power or placed a spell on him that gave him a longer lifespan?

Hmm…I just can’t shake the feeling that Rumpelstiltskin and the Mad Hatter are connected somehow. Ooo! I wonder if the Mad Hatter was the creator of the curse? 😮 😮 😮
