I’m not saying that she isn’t ALSO Regina’s mother or the Queen of Hearts BUT I just heard this on the Secrets of Once Upon a Time podcast (which I was very behind on) and no one else seems to realize this, even though Daniel pimped that show once on this podcast. So I have to post this info once and for all:
Look familar? It’s almost exactly what we saw in Skin Deep!!! That’s Nurse Ratched and Chief(?) from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I don’t know anything about that movie except that it takes place in a mental institution.
Homage, at least. Not just a coincidence.
Edit:
Aha! I see King Arthur was aware of it!:@King Arthur wrote:
Perhaps the asylum IS Wonderland in the real (SB) world. I know it has been said the nurse and the janitor at the asylum are like characters from the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest, but that could just be their Storeybrook counterparts.
He posted about it in Mr. K. theory thread
But that is literally, according to the search button, the only other reference to Nurse Ratched on the forums until now!
So it’s time to openly acknowledge it!

What they might be doing is trying to draw a connection between the conditions of the mental institute in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the mental institute in SB, maybe implying their are some people who don’t really belong there or that the people there really have no chance of ever leaving if you really want to draw a comparison between the two mental institutes.
It could be an Easter egg (Its a bit to obvious/purposeful, but you never know), we’ll know for sure its all the rouse if we see Apollo Bars being handed to the patients while they listen to Geronimo Jackson 😛

But there was an interview with Horowitz and Kitsis at the Paley event where the interviewer mentioned that she’d looked like Nurse Ratched and the guys smiled and said that she’d certainly looked like Nurse Ratched to them too, so that’s pretty conclusive evidence as to who she was meant to be. 😉

Apparently they are movie buffs, and extensive readers so we can expect anything in the future to show up… ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS WHAT FUN! I love looking for Easter eggs but I never watched LOST so Easter eggs from other genres will be fun for other viewers like me.

March 28, 2012 at 8:48 pm #140220malchoreParticipantYeah, we knew that. In fact the night the episode aired, Jane Espenson (who wrote that episode) acknowledged via Twitter that the nurse was intended to resemble Nurse Rachted. It’s mentioned several times in the Episode forum (for Skin Deep.)
March 30, 2012 at 12:14 pm #140379SlurpeezParticipantAccording to the credits for episode 12, the severe nurse was played an actress named Ingrid Torrance. She is not the Queen of Hearts from episode 17, in which the credits list the Queen of Hearts being played by another actress: Jennifer Koenig. This knowledge also discredits the theory that the Queen of Hearts is Regina’s mother, Cora, who is in fact played by Barbara Hershey in the credits for episode 18. There we have it: three different actress for three different characters.
1. Severe nurse is played by Ingrid Torrance.
2. The Queen of Hearts is played by Jennifer Koenig
3. Cora, Regina’s mother, is played by Barbara Hershey."That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. When you leave it, there’s this feeling that you can’t shake. You just miss it." Neal Cassidy

They always put in these interesting clues that are not clues. I don’t think they should do that. It is the part of the show that i find cheesy. I think do clues that mean something. Like Red’s glass wolf. That is an interesting clues. But these clues that are meaningless are not the way to go, in my opinion.
March 30, 2012 at 12:59 pm #140386SnickerdoodleParticipantshe may yet have a role to play 😉
March 30, 2012 at 1:16 pm #140388PheeParticipantI’m not ruling out Regina’s mum being QoH yet. Yes, I know they had a different actress to play her, but if they were trying to keep her identity secret, which they did by having her face covered and her voice muffled, then they’d hardly hire Barbara for that ep and have her name in the credits. So until proven otherwise, I’m sticking with my conspiracy theory. 😛
