For reasons unknown to me, we don’t have an official Doctor Who thread. This literally makes no sense since after 4 years at this joint, if there is one thing I know, it’s that a majority of us watch Doctor Who/like talking about it.
So. Here’s the S9 trailer from SDCC
Thoughts?
Questions? (I have many)
1. How is Missy coming back? Are you excited for Missy to come back?
2. Who is Maisie Williams playing? (Moff has said she’s a brand new character, but rule 1: Moffat lies. I think she’s Susan…)
3. The Doctor is a rock star? YES HE IS
4. How will 12 be different this season than last? (He’s proclaiming his savior archetype ever so loudly and proudly whereas last year he tried to run from it quite a bit)
5. Clara: yay or nay? (Still mostly a nay from me, but willing to sit through another season of her so long as the focus returns to the Doctor)
6. I can haz S9 now plz?

Are you excited for Missy to come back?
No! The Master is the same plot, over and over and over. Even when we’re left thinking there’s been character development — eg, at the end of The End of Time — it just resets to zero the next time around.
Wacky chaos isn’t a sustainable plotline.

August 1, 2015 at 6:01 pm #306755PriceofMagicParticipantI hate modern Clara as a companion. Oswin and Snowman Clara were okay but modern Clara is just irritating and last series was too much the Clara show. The Christmas special was okay as a would-be send off for the character but, no, Clara stayed which is a major disappointment as up to that point that has been the only episode of Capaldi’s run that I liked.
The balance is all out on Doctor Who at the moment, it needs to have both light and dark aspects not dark and darker. I loved Matt Smith’s (although when modern Clara entered the picture it wasn’t as good as the Amy Pond era) run because although his run was darker than Tennant’s, his doctor balanced it out. Capaldi isn’t a bad doctor but the chemistry is all wrong with Clara- they do not bounce off of each other naturally. The 12/Clara pairing is certainly no 10/Donna or 11/Amy.
I did not enjoy series 8 of Doctor Who, I only watched it because it was Doctor Who. I’m fed up of all the characters treating Clara as if the sun shines out her backside.
Unfortunately such is my distaste for Clara and series 8 in general, that series 9 of Doctor Who may be my last unless Clara shuts the hell up/disappears permanently and the Doctor becomes the main focus once more.

Keeper of FelixAugust 1, 2015 at 10:52 pm #306760RumplesGirlKeymasterI’ll try to answer my own questions
1. How is Missy coming back? Are you excited for Missy to come back?
No idea how. Excited? Yes and no. I ended up loving how bananas she was and I think she needs to come back in order to answer questions–like where is Gallifrey and how she came back in the first place (in S8). But I don’t want it to turn into the Doctor vs The Master (Mistress) again and again and again.
5. Clara: yay or nay? (Still mostly a nay from me, but willing to sit through another season of her so long as the focus returns to the Doctor)
I described my relationship with Clara like this one time: I liked Rory better than Amy but I prefer both of them to Clara. I really disliked S7 Clara because she was weepy and way too…lackluster. I enjoyed in S8 that she got a bit of a backbone, which she needed to go toe to toe with 12; I also enjoyed Moff’s thesis about abusive and addictive relationships that he was working through with Clara but she is still made out to be “the important person EVER” and it BUGS me. I also really don’t like how she’s taken the place of the Doctor as being the center of the story.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 2, 2015 at 2:51 pm #306766runaroundmacyParticipantAre you excited for Missy to come back? I’m cautiously optimistic about Missy coming back. I thought she was completely mental and I enjoyed her a lot, so it felt a little rushed when we find out she’s the Master and then she’s gone? So even in that second, I thought No WAY she is gone for good. It does feel a bit too soon for a big Master vs Doctor showdown again, but then again, it’s been like 7 or so years for us but maybe 400 years or so for him, so I guess time travel is well…. wibbly wobbly.
How will 12 be different this season than last? Who is Maisie Williams playing? My impression of 12 now, is that he’s got a bit fractured, a bit messy, and little more mad man with a box. He seems disheveled, but perhaps more with a purpose? I can’t tell because it really is only like a minute and a half of footage. I’m hoping the search for Gallifrey comes up? It was such a HUGE part of the 50th and it’s barely been mentioned (has it even been mentioned?) I do think Maisie Willaims will be some sort of Time Lord character, connecting this to previous Doctors which is exciting. We were thinking Ramona, but I think Susan is a grand choice (good thinking RG). I don’t know why we didn’t think of that. It feels that maybe some of the Doctor’s past will be coming back to haunt him? Either way, there’s a lot of explosions apparently.
Clara: Yay or Nay? I really wish I could like Clara. She was interesting at first, but I didn’t like the unrequited love angle with her and 11. I didn’t like her relationship with 12 at first, but I’m finding it hard to really enjoy 12 too. It always takes me a while to warm up to a new doctor so I’m sure he will grow on me, although I think Capaldi is brilliant. But Clara… I actually liked her a lot more with the introduction of Danny Pink (and yes, I think he’s coming back. I don’t care what you think, don’t dash my dreams). I liked her forming a relationship outside of the Doctor, and her brokenness when Danny was killed. But once he was gone, I was over her again. I think it’s time for a new companion, in my own humble personal opinion. I do see why others like her though.

It *has* to. I just has to at this point. We’ve had an entire season since the 50th and nothing about Gallifrey which doesn’t…jive. The Doctor should be actively looking for it. I don’t know if Moff and the crew wanted to give 12 time to settle in and get through his first season and now they’ll address but since Missy is coming back, Gallifrey HAS to be next.

Ooooh. I like the idea of Romana. I loved Romana II (she and Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor were fab. Helps that they were married in real life…)

Of course. Sci Fi means lots of explosives. The JJ Abrams style of directing.
But once he was gone, I was over her again. I think it’s time for a new companion, in my own humble personal opinion.
Agreed and I really need it to not be a modern earth woman. It’s literally all this Regenerated Series has had in terms of long term, constant companions (Jack was around only for a short time, same with Mickey). Otherwise: Rose–Martha–Donna–Amy (okay, and Rory)–Clara. That’s it. Modern Earth women. Now, I get that Doctor Who more often than not does make the companion a modern earth woman (because TV thinks it needs the sex appeal angle) but the classic era did have its fair share of non-modern, non-women. Jamie is still one of the best companions and he was non modern and not a woman. Nyssa annoyed the living daylights out of me, but again, not modern, if a woman. Leela and Adric are another good example. It’s…bothersome that a show that has really reached the modern 21stc age and posits itself on pushing the envelope of morality and ethics (Lizard Lady from the Dawn of time and her wife, anyone?) is stuck on this rather un-modern approach to who should be traveling with the Doctor. (I’ll get off my soap box now)

A young version of Clara? One of the WWTW copies that the Doctor keeps encountering?

August 3, 2015 at 4:49 pm #306818PriceofMagicParticipantI think a new companion should be someone from a past era who would be amazed at modern every day objects. Snowman Clara would’ve been good (and she seemed smart but not too in your face) but I hate modern Clara, I was disappointed when she wasn’t killed off in the Christmas special which, up until that point had been the best episode in 12’s run so far.
