10×3 “Thin Ice”
8.5/10
–I loved this episode!
–There’s something ironically relevant in this week’s episode. It might take place in 1814 but it’s all about privilege and how that status makes people view those below them as less than human. Sutcliff is basically Farage and Trump (said without trying to open a can of political worms)
–Going along with that, Peter Capaldi delivered an excellent speech on how we should measure human’s progress. The fact this current companion is queer and black and working class makes it even better.
–Obviously some very strong whiffs of The Beast Below in this week. But I think there was enough difference in the monsters (one held hostage but trying to help vs one held hostage with no desire to help humanity) not to mention the ultimate villain that it stands apart.
–“You don’t steer the TARDIS. You reason with it.” “How?” “Unsuccessfully most of the time.”
–Great costumes this week.
–So the knocking? It’s the Master, yes?
–What is the point of Nardole? I’m not sure what he’s supposed to be doing apart from serving as a scold to the Doctor.

And Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them:
Maybe a bit of The Empire Strikes Back, too, with the elephant.
–So the knocking? It’s the Master, yes?
Whatever it is, it mostly knocked in sets of three — except for the final time, when it did four, or maybe seven (depending on where the break was). If the Master is in the vault, then there would be four knocks every time, wouldn’t there?

He’s the beta-tester for a new android body design? The last time the Doctor saw River, he knew she’d be going to the library soon. A modified Nardole suit could be the Doctor’s plan to get River out, for the big Moffat-and-Capaldi goodbye episode.

I thought about that too. Unless they are trying to throw us off?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 1, 2017 at 4:50 pm #337570shaunakParticipantFirstly, I love Doctor Who and there are very few episodes that I cannot stand. I have been enjoying this season so far. That said…. Does anyone else feel a real sense of plot rehashing? First episode felt Waters of Mars-y, second episode felt End of the World-ish, this felt Beast Below-ish with a splice of Kill the Moon and just a hint of Empty Child…
Loved the speech about the value of life. Loved the exchange about the Doctor killing people and watching people die and moving on. And I got a real kick out of the Pete joke.
I can’t decide how I feel about Bill. On the one hand she makes me absolutely crazy. On the other hand, I feel like the questions she asks are the kinds of things I would ask. “What if I step on a butterfly?” “What happened on Earth?” Maybe that’s why she annoys me, we’re too similar. LOL
One thing I really enjoyed about this episode was the time they spent just doing fun Fair things. Eating whatever offal thing the Doctor was eating, playing games, etc. The little details get me going.

Yes, to be sure.
On the one hand she makes me absolutely crazy.
I’m curious…what about her does that? Is it the questioning or something else?

I’m not 100% sure… Part of it is the way her brain processes things I think. Her saying the TARDIS looked like a kitchen, talking about it being a knock-through, the way she was SO hung up on The Doctor having two hearts and therefore must have high blood pressure…. She sort of rubs me the wrong way. It is also possible that I got annoyed by her “I don’t like my face” speech. I have been trying to pinpoint what about her bothers me. It’s not really anything overt.
Maybe it’s just residual disappointment that she’s not from the ’80s. Ha.

I sooooooo wanted her to be from the 80s!

–A perfectly fine episode. Nothing to write home about but nothing terrible either. Maybe a 7.5/10
–I think the episode kept Bill and the Doctor apart for just a bit too long. They don’t have quite the same pizzazz with other people that they do with each other.
–That’s gotta be the Master inside Checkov’s Vault. But which one?
–Still really don’t get why the Doctor took this oath to become a prisoner on Earth. Was it the only way he could get the Master/Mistress to stay inside the Vault?
–The horror story tropes were well done, even if it was super textbook.
–Those things were basically bed bugs on steroids.

Hmmm… The Doctor and the Master are brothers[*], and this episode was all about sacrifice to look after family.
[*] Or so the Doctor Who podcasts say, based on strong (but circumstantial) evidence.
ETA: I didn’t recognize Poirot until the credits.

–Another good episode! I loved all the socio-political commentary on the faults of a capitalist society.
–I’m not sure what Nardole’s purpose is but he’s got good comedic timing with the Doctor and Bill
–Bill’s “death” was really well played and I got slightly choked up at her calling out for her mom.
–“Do people ever hit you?” “Only when I’m talking.”
–So….the Doctor’s….blind? Thoughts??!
–No but really, who is in that vault? I get the feeling it’s not Missy. I think it’s the Master but I don’t know why or where in his timestream.
–“I’ve got some spare eyes somewhere. I think they’re from a lizard…”
