–I’m slightly confused by the ending. Humans don’t remember the Monks (either consciously or subconsciously forgetting the past six months) but those six months did happen and we saw that people did die. Either the public executions were fake to curtail rebellion or this is another example of the writers making everything too easy. There was no rapid undoing of that time unlike in the S3 finale.
That’s one of the problems I’ve often had with the Capaldi era, as much as I love his Doctor. The whole “humans forget alien invasions” thing. The trees, the Frost Faire fish, and now the Monks.
[adrotate group="5"]June 4, 2017 at 6:01 pm #339432Ranisha PittsParticipantSo the third part of the trilogy actually had me bit unnerved and emotional. Maybe because I know we are losing Capaldi and there is no certainty of Bill making it past this season. However when Bill was willing to sacrifice herself I was teary not to mention it brought some strong river song feelings.
@RumplesGirl I literally watch the mom memory savior with two sides. On one side I felt like you did yet on the other side there was something so emotional sweet about her memory to her mom, her talking to her mom. I mean the emotional impact of that hit even if it was somewhat fragmented. But can I saw how much I LOVE absolutely love the relationship between the doctor and Bill. Like there is such a sentimental sweetness about them. The beauty of platonic/familial love is truly something special in its own right. In a social-media-interactive world where shipping makes it seems like romanticism is the sole significant highlight of almost any narrative or character interaction there is something refreshing about watching platonic and familial relationships develop and blossom into love and connection that is just valued and worthwhile as the romantic one. (Holy Heck Run on sentence.)
I guess what I am saying is I enjoyed the 3rd part of the Trilogy even with its faults. It really struck my heart touch me pang me. I literally cried. For that hour I was both emotional enthralled and invested.
Bill, Doctor, and Missy scenes and interactions just sort of hit home.
Beautiful acting by all three.
Nordole I am sorry buddy I want to love you , however you are just not fitting into the mix like I want you to. You are not harmonizing the trio for me. I found the Doctor, Missy, and Bill to make a far better peanut butter and banana sandwich of a team. But that just me and dorkiness.
I really really wanted River and Missy to meet. Alex and Michelle, Those acting beauties would have been fun together!

I don’t quite get what Nardole’s purpose is. His presence was only loosely explained with the Missy reveal and the actor is humorous and sweet in his scenes but he feels like an afterthought. I know he’s mostly a robot but that doesn’t mean there can be a story or development for him.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"June 5, 2017 at 3:36 pm #339439shaunakParticipantI was really disappointed with this episode. It had its moments that I liked, but was altogether too mediocre for my liking. There were bizarre moments, like introducing Missy as “the other last of the Time Lords” when neither one of them are anything of the sort anymore…. I confess to being annoyed with the similarities to both Last of the Time Lords and Turn Left. I DID like the Magpie Electronics callback…
I LIKED the idea of the Doctor being cynical and joining the Monks because of all the years spent saving the world and then they just hand it over. I wish they had actually gone with that instead of him playing a big practical joke on Bill. I did not like that they had Bill shoot The Doctor FOUR TIMES, nor did I appreciate the obvious audience fake-out of an early regeneration.
I liked Bill’s “interaction” with her mom. I LOVED The Doctor telling her that in a world of 7 billion, there is one like her. I also loved the entirety of Missy’s place in the story. I don’t really even like Missy, but I adore the way they used her in this arc. Loved her talking about her version of good and The Doctor’s version of good; loved her talking about thinking about all the people she killed. I know they won’t keep the kinder, gentler version of Missy/The Master forever, but I like seeing the different facets of their relationship.

This is my biggest complaint about the episode as well. There was such a meaty set up in that confrontation when you think the Doctor is working with the Monks.

Keeping alive the Doctor Who Podcast’s tradition of “Kooky Theory of the Week”: “The Lie of the Land” was the first time Bill met the Doctor.
I think the Doctor and Missy switched bodies during the imprisonment flashback, or did something like 11’s Zygon/Human identity spell. As the ship crashed into the dock, the laughing Doctor’s voice changed from male to female, to show that the real identity is reasserting itself. Nardole has been there all along to keep the Master from going off the deep end, while the Doctor serves the Master’s sentence.

Thanks! I was wrong about this…
After seeing “Smile”, I think Bill’s planet is a far-future copy of Earth.
…but still kind of close, though just by accident, so I’ve got my fingers crossed for luck this time.

–Ehhhhh not my least favorite of the season but miles away from my favorite of the year.
–Points given for bringing back several classic Who figures with a big surprise in the form of Alpha Centauri!
–However points deducted for a mostly by-the-book episode. I guess that’s not a bad thing, especially in a season that started off being an introduction to Doctor Who for anyone who hadn’t seen it before. But still, this week’s narrative was a bit too rote.
–For example, the whole Brits vs Ice Warriors could have been done away with especially since we’ve seen the 12th Doctor as a Negotiator several times in his run. I’d like to have seen an episode of just Bill and the Empress discussing their cultures with regards to men, women empowerment, colonialism ect. It’d fit with the heavy political bent of this season. And, because I know we have to have some sort of driving force in an episode, the Doctor and Bill could have easily just trapped in a cave with the Empress, trying to break free.
–Soooo why did the TARDIS leave Mars with Nardole?
–Missy seems perfectly fine going back inside the vault. Okay, if we’re redeeming the Master/Mistress, that’s fine but there are only small moments that hint at his/her progress. I need something more substantial.
–Along with that, why do we end with Missy asking the Doctor if he’s okay? That’s an odd ending, yeah?
–I think this is the least I’ve laughed during an episode all season. The only chuckle I got was that the Doctor hasn’t seen classic sci-fi movies like the Terminator or the Thing, but he has seen Frozen. Go figure.
–Next week looks much better. Here’s hoping!
