–Along with that, why do we end with Missy asking the Doctor if he’s okay? That’s an odd ending, yeah?
This was pretty much my big question after watching the whole episode. That, and why did Nardole OF ALL PEOPLE go to Missy for help? And why does he think The Doctor is incapable of remotely calling the TARDIS as we have seen him do in previous episodes? Or is that an ability that comes and goes? lol
I also enjoyed Alpha Centauri. It was a nice little callback. My general feeling about the overall feel of this season is that they are hearkening back to classic Who when they had multi-episode stories and took their sweet time building up to things. I feel like they are really taking their time building up to things and then run out of time to resolve them. The Monks trilogy is an excellent example of this.
Also: Ben Kingsley’s son!
Overall, I didn’t hate it, and I am SO RELIEVED we got this instead of a sequel to Sleep No More.
[adrotate group="5"]June 14, 2017 at 9:47 am #339571Ranisha PittsParticipantThis episode left me longing. Honestly, I prefer this to be the trilogy vs. the Monks. Overall, I enjoyed the concept of the episode but I wanted more. I think RG hinted on what I was lacking the political commentary. Bill being trapped with the Queen would be amazing pop quiz for her to show what all her tutelage with the doctor has brought forth. Sort of a coming of age with Bill especially what happen regarding the monks.
Nordole going to Missy, I had a pit in my stomach yet at the same time there was excitement. Because I been waiting to see Missy out of the vault however I worry that Missy may be up to something.
I also wonder if the oath impacts the doctor physical, like the Raven did to Clara, that Missy being outside of the vault before time hurts him or kills him. I could be wrong. And its just notion.
I am excited to see Missy outside of the vault. I feel like Missy, the Doctor, Bill, and Nordole finally makes a dynamic that gels for me. We have Missy and the Doctors’ opposing views, Bill’s enthusiastic sweet innocence, Nordole’s quirkiness that works for me in ways I simply can’t explain.
Bill and the Doctors’ relationship is just so sweet. I love their interaction."I will be kind but I will speak my mind."

–I quite liked this one!
–Still not as good as Thin Ice IMO but a definite step up from last week, which is ironic given that the basic pitch is the same. Two warring sides, invaders vs natives, the Doctor and Bill sympathetic to the sides. But what made this episode better was that it felt so much more human. These are just kids trying to carry on the way the adults would have because the “Otherization” of the opposite side has been drilled into them. In the end, they can see that they’re the same. There are no hardened soldiers here, just scared children.
–This gives the Doctor a chance to play a different archetype than his hero or angry god one. His “father” role has been coming out more this year than others, largely because he acts like a father/grandfather/teacher to Bill (check out the look of pride on his face when he hears Bill explain the language auto translate to the Picts/Romans). I like this side of him. Slightly grumpy, exasperated, but also protective.
–With all that said, however, talk about an utterly bland monster!
–Remind me to use popcorn as an escape mechanism if ever I’m in trouble.
–The Doctor not only lived in Roman times but he also juggled and was a Vestal Virgin, second class.
–The conversation about Bill’s sexual orientation was hilarious. She’s the restrictive one, eh?
–Also, big props to the writer for letting Bill puzzle out the TARDIS language auto-translate on her own instead of having the Doctor explain it to her.
–“It’s called charm.” “I’m against that.”
–“I’ve been standing at at the gate of your world, keeping you all safe, since you crawled out of the slime. I’m not stopping now.” Ah, there’s my mythic hero.
–Okay, poignant and sweet as the episode was, the crow “Kar/Caw” thing was eye roll inducing. There’s a line, Doctor Who, between heartfelt and sickly sweet.
–Sooooo. Missy. Guys, I’m conflicted. I mean, giving Michelle Gomez something new to do is welcome and she’s doing slightly repentant but still cheeky Master/Mistress really well, as well as she did “look at me I’m totally bananas” Master/Mistress. But her redemption is lightening fast because there’s no time devoted to it outside of a few snippets here and there.
–Preview for next week! Simm is in the house! Ahhh!
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"June 18, 2017 at 9:53 pm #339639Ranisha PittsParticipantI find Missy hard to trust but man she is fun to watch. Part me is like yay she is out of the vault and Oh no she is out of the vault. LOL
Bill and the Doctor relationship are my favorite thing. I love the Doctor showing a bit of his paternal side to him. I do wonder what is it about Bill that brings that out of him? I do wonder if Bill view’s him as sort of a surrogate father figure. I mean Bill idolize the memory of her mother but she has little to say about a father.
Another thing I liked about this episode was when the doctor was going to play sacrificial messianic hero, he was told, it was not up to him to do the protecting it was up to the humans to do the protecting.
I agree the conservation with Bill explaining her orientation was humorous.
Overall I liked this episode a lot. And the next one looks to be exciting.
Either way I am going to probably be an emotional for these last few ……

June 19, 2017 at 12:04 pm #339651shaunakParticipantYep, I would say the conversation about sexual orientation was the high point of this episode for me. Well, that and the whole Doctor/Missy interaction at the end. They’re building up such a positive relationship between them, and I feel like I’m going to be SO sad when Missy/The Master goes back to being bad eventually. This reform CAN’T possibly last… can it?

There’s a really interesting theory I was talking about with @runaroundmacy and @ranishapitts about Missy’s reform. Basically, Missy is pre-Simm Master; she regenerates into him and the animosity SimmMaster feels for the Doctor is based on whatever happens these next two episodes.
I’ve been trying to rack my brain on whether or not Missy has said anything since she first appeared in S8 about her time as Simm but nothing comes to mind.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"June 19, 2017 at 4:36 pm #339654shaunakParticipantOoh I might have to look up some transcripts from her first season. That would make things interesting!

That would be neat, but wouldn’t it break continuity? Professor Yana was Simm Master’s “preincarnation”, and Yana and Chan-Tho worked together long enough to develop a close friendship (at least from her point of view). Or do you mean that Missy regenerates into Yana?
Simm Master in the preview has the classic Master beard, which I don’t think he ever wore during the Tennant years. He could be putting on a favourite old face, like the Doctor did as the Curator.
