Or do you mean that Missy regenerates into Yana?
I suppose she’d have to yes. Yana is the tricky part because wasn’t Yana hiding out–for reasons unknown– when 10 found him? It might mess with continuity but I think Moffat would come up with some sort of handwave-y thing to make it work if he wanted?

At least that’s how I interpreted it at the time. Given that the time war ended up very differently than we (and the Doctor) thought it did, there could very well be more to the story of how the Master ended up as Yana! đŻ

Exactly. Moff’s already rewritten a large port of RTD’s era with the Time War so he could rewrite the S3 (and final two episodes of 10’s tenure) to fit whatever he/the BBC/and Chibnill have discussed moving forward.

Speaking of Derek Jacobi’s Master, he’s getting his own Big Finish series.
June 21, 2017 at 3:32 pm #339708Sci-Fi GirlParticipantOk, I’ve parsed this quote from the transcript of The Sound of Drums
MASTER: Back home. Where is it, Doctor?
DOCTOR: Gone.
MASTER: How can Gallifrey be gone?
DOCTOR: It burnt.
MASTER: And the Time Lords?
DOCTOR: Dead. And the Daleks, more or less. What happened to you?
MASTER: The Time Lords only resurrected me because they knew I’d be the perfect warrior for a Time War. I was there when the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. I saw it. I ran. I ran so far. Made myself human so they would never find me, because I was so scared.
DOCTOR: I know.
MASTER: All of them? But not you, which must mean
DOCTOR: I was the only one who could end it. And I tried. I did. I tried everything.
That gives a pretty specific origin for Yana, and I think it pretty much rules out that theory, sorry. Â Whatever comes next, I don’t think it’s that.

Well it does and doesn’t. Yes, it’s very specific to what RTD wanted but at the same time, I could 100% see the Doctor (Moff) giving the Master this false origin story instead of whatever really happens.
I agree the line seems to crush the theory but…well it’s Doctor Who. They want to wibbly wobbly timey wimey this, they absolutely can.

Oh. My. God.
I loved–LOVED–this episode.
“It’s the Genesis of the Cyberman.” I Â about fell outta my chair, y’all between the classic Cybermen coming back and the return of the Master…wow.
I can’t decide if it is better than Thin Ice–because they are ultimately very different types of DW–but it was fantastic.
I want to quote every single Missy line but since I can’t here are some of the best
–“These are my plucky assistants: Thing One and the Other One.”
–“What does he call you? Companions, pets…snacks?”
–“These are my disposables: exposition and comic relief.”
–Missy casually trolling the fandom by insisting that the Doctor’s name is actually Doctor Who had me in stitches. Seriously, well played writers. Well played.
–Bill đ Heartbreak. Absolute heartbreak. I hope we can save her somehow….and yet, while it would be very Moff like to bring back the dead character, the Doctor’s flashforward seems to suggest that he’s in a state of personal anguish. The longer hair, the ragged clothes, the screams of agony.
–So the Doctor regenerates alone in the snow? That must be the final scene at Xmas, yes?
–Sometimes Moff and company can get a bit too in love with timey wimey shenanigans and telling two different time period stories but this was the best way of doing it since Blink, I think.
–There were a lot of really great proper scares in this episode. The kind that might make a kid hide behind a couch.
–Master! So, he does not regenerate from Missy but he’s been hiding on since…when? He references being the Prime Minister so it’s post S3 with Martha, but pre-end of 10’s reign? Clarification hopefully coming soon.
–Also, what does the Master hope to achieve here? He’s upgrading humans from a human like planet to what end? Take over the Earth?
–Basically that nurse was Nurse Ratchard, yes?
–The music for this episode was sooooo good. I especially loved the music that played in the introduction when they were doing long shots of the space ship and the black hole.
–Peter Capaldi. Guys…I don’t want him to go đ
