Rumple has the Quill the Author used. But where did he get it? Did he trade for it? Steal it? Did he find it in the Sorcerer’s house? In the Apprentice’s house?

This is rump we are talking about. I would guess he got it from his shop. If not that, I’d say Sorcerer’s Mansion, since the hat was there and the books as well. It seems like the place it’d be.

The Enchanted Trees created the quill. All the enchanted trees got together to discuss their retaliation for so many people chopping them down for magical Wardrobes, puppets without strings, and pirate ships. Knowing that soon there wouldn’t be any of them left, the enchanted trees decided to make a quill from one of their branches, a quill that would allow them to control the very people chopping them down. They intended to use the quill to save their dying race, but, unfortunately, having no proper digits, one of the trees dropped the quill.
A human came along and found it – probably the sorcerer. Seeing the power the quill possessed lead the humans to begin the mass genocide of the enchanted trees.
And that is why there are no more enchanted trees left today, class. 😉

So they are Ents?

Ents are entirely different. An Ent would’ve been able to pick up the quill after dropping it. Perhaps they are distantly related though. Maybe the first enchanted trees came from Middle Earth.

They fled because they were tired of stupid wizards using them for their own devices—only to land in a world where stupid wizards want to use them for their own devices.
Poor trees.

Author was going to construct a new quill from a branch but couldn’t because it was not an enchanted tree. So assuming he did have an enchanted tree at hand, would he have been able to continuing writing and manipulating stories? If so, then why does no one else go and make quills from enchanted trees? I mean, Rump is centuries old and really powerful and very intelligent. He clearly knows the pen comes from an enchanted tree so why has he never made a quill from it? Am I thinking too hard again?
*prepares for RG to say plot*
One solution I was thinking of is that maybe its not just the pen, but also the book. Blue Fairy said the book was powerful did she not? Maybe the magic of the pen and the magic of the book must be combined to bring the effects into fruition. If so, Rump already has the pen and can easily get his hands on the book so why need the author??"I could have the giant duck as my steed!" --Daniel Radcliffe

You must have both quill and be the Author.
An Author without a quill is only an Author in name.
A quill with no Author is just another writing utensil.
