Has Belle been inconsistent with what she tells Rumple? Yup, she has. But has Rumple been inconsistent with what he’s told Belle? Yup, he most certainly has. So I can’t blame Belle for being inconsistent when it seems she’s only reacting to the inconsistencies of Rumple.

So what you are saying is that two wrongs make a right? They are both to blame for the inconsistencies. We must be seeing this from a completely different angles because I see it as Belle being inconsistent and Rumple reacting to those inconsistencies. Still does not make it right just means they are both to blame. Belle is not just an innocent victim in all this she is an active member of the abuse.

Yes we must be seeing it differently which is interesting. I don’t view it as two wrongs because I view it as Belle behaving and reacting to Rumple’s inconsistencies. So when she says he can possibly see the child, it’s usually when he’s saying something nicer or does something nicer. And then she freaks out and says you’re a beast and you will never see our son when he locks her on a ship or puts a cuff on her and threatens to steal her baby. To me, she’s just reacting to what Rumple is doing. Rumple is always the aggressor and then she acts accordingly, or at least that’s how I perceive it. Now it comes off as Belle being wishy washy and inconsistent but that’s only because Rumple can’t make up his damn mind on what he wants to be!

Okay let’s see if we can get on the same page, give me a specific example of when Rumple was the aggressor and was the first one to be inconsistent. Definitely was not the cuff incident, because he was just hanging out in his shop not bothering anyone when she freaked out and decided to work with Zelena to steal a wand to take her and their baby to a place he could not find them. That is her being the aggressor and inconsistant

How about when he said he was going to use the shears of destiny on Gideon to change his fate so Gideon wouldn’t hate him? How about when Belle simply hid away from Rumple bc she was legitimately afraid of him so then Rumple forced her to stay on the ship which almost cost her and their son’s life?
And as far as the cuff incident….are you forgetting why she wanted to get the sorcerer’s wand? It was so she could get far away from him bc he was threatening the child. So again, she was reacting to his behavior. She rarely ever does something that isn’t a direct reaction toward something he says or does.
November 30, 2016 at 1:22 pm #330978nevermoreParticipantUgh, alright, I’ll throw in my 2c. This relationship is a hurling, screeching, flaming train wreck of a thing, and while part of me is almost curious to see how A&E are going to pretzel it back to life — which, mark my words, they will — a much bigger part of me is not looking forward to what will be inevitably a botched and unsatisfying revival.
If I can sidestep the abuse issue for a second, because I think it’s a complicated question, and @Slurpeez dealt with some of that upthread … The problem is with Rumple’s narrative function, and with the way the show has “timed” Rumbelle’s breakups and reunions in such a way that Belle is always dumping Rumple when he’s at his “lowest” both morally and power-wise, and taking him back when he’s at his more powerful/evil/self-satisfied. This season, we have Rumple in full mid-life crisis mode: complete with the haircut, the affair with his former student, and the whole “I wanna be bad shtick” (maybe we’ll get the red Porsche later). But he’s also meant to become a father again, and that is one huge emotional vulnerability for his character. So actually it’s not surprising that Belle is throwing insults and being emotionally nasty to him — that’s the MO. Even if she doesn’t realize it, the timing of her rejections is systematic, and makes her seem like she’s subconsciously sensing the weakness and inflecting emotional pain, but is attracted to/come back for the power. This doesn’t accord with her ideology, for sure, but in practice, the more Belle is being portrayed as an irrational, hysterical shrew — as she is in this season — the more her more positive qualities (seeing the best in people and forgiving them) recede to the background or just come across as whimsy, rather than actual moral commitment. This also dovetails with the fact that she’s seemingly willing to use Rumple’s magic and lean on him for emotional support when she’s feeling low or threatened, but dumps him as soon as she has a leg over him.And there’s no reason to think that this pattern will stop in the future, at least based on the spoilers. To me, using the pregnancy as a reward/weapon system is especially abhorrent: if she’s concerned for the child and wants out, she needs to stop advertising to Rumple that she’s going to take the child “so far away that he’ll never find them” — for one thing, that’s one deeply ineffective way of getting herself out of Rumple’s orbit. The way to do it is to lull him into not even thinking she might leave, and then sneaking out when he doesn’t expect. So either Belle is an idiot, or she’s a manipulator, or both. This brings me to my last point.
What I find unforgivable in the way they’ve been writing Belle is that they seem to be drawing a whole lot on an old Victorian, extremely misogynist stereotype of women. Belle is naive and moralistic, but simultaneously “subconsciously” cunning/materialistic in a way that makes her a bigot, but so profoundly lacking in self awareness that she can’t see the contradictions. Think Mrs. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice.
Also, this post isn’t meant to be a defense of Rumple. At this point, forget difficult to love, he’s difficult not to loathe. And that’s partly because his character’s likability as a potentially redeemable anti-hero hinges on Belle liking him, and being likable herself. That function used to be occupied by Neal, but they killed him and largely forgot about him, so there’s that. Anyway, since neither is the case, even if they “fix” Rumbelle, they can’t fix the characters. So actually, I don’t particularly care if they are together or not. As far as I’m concerned the train wreck Rumbelle can keep on hurling down the tracks, spitting fire and brimstone — these two amply deserve each other.

Nope, she wanted the wand because the door of the shop was locked for the last couple of days and she knew he was in there, so he must be up to no good. “he’s closed the shop he has been in there for days, I know he is up to something” that is why she decided to work with Zelena and steal the wand. I mean did it occur to her that he was thinking about what she said? Nope she automatically assumed he was up to no good and was aggressive in working with Zelena stealing a wand, and running away without even asking him what he was doing. After their conversation where she stated that “if you want your son’s love don’t take it be worthy of it” so she says this and then doesn’t even give him a chance to do so. That is inconsistency
How about when he said he was going to use the shears of destiny on Gideon to change his fate so Gideon wouldn’t hate him?
He has never said that. Evil Queen said that, told Zelena that, who told Belle that. Could that have been his plan, maybe but we are not sure. Question here would be if it wasn’t his plan why didn’t he tell her so, but then again we got that answer last episode with the acceleration of the pregnancy, he does not think she would believe him.
How about when Belle simply hid away from Rumple bc she was legitimately afraid of him so then Rumple forced her to stay on the ship which almost cost her and their son’s life?
Why was she legitimately afraid of him in the first place, this was right after the wake up of the sleeping curse, in which he stated that he would try and be the best person he could be for her. So she is going off the sayings of a Morpheus grown up child which we have already discussed how wrong that was. Right before the sleeping curse she stated “I do know who you truly are, that’s why I love you” and then in this scene we have Rumple honestly telling her that he is here to protect her and the baby from Hyde and her saying “the only person we need protecting from is you” that is both untrue at this time and verbally abusive. What exactly has he done to her that needs protecting from?

I think you are forgetting why Belle even put herself under the sleeping curse to begin with. We could honestly go back and forth until they first met to see causes and effects and reactions between these two. I just happen to see it as her giving Rumple many many many many many opportunities to be the man he claims he wants to be but he always reverts back to the darkness. Always. Even if you say Belle is the abusive one, you cannot argue that if Rumple just was the man he knows Belle wants and says he wants to be and will be, none of this turmoil would be happening.
For example, Rumple slept with Belle and Belle only agreed to that when she thought he was done with darkness for for good. She thought he was going to be the hero she wanted. But then he went and took the darkness back from Emma and took all the power of the DO’s, and then lied to Belle about it. How about in season 4 when he said the thing he cared about the most was her, but then the gauntlet he had from camelot that shows what you care about the most led her straight to the dagger (or maybe the hat, it’s a little fuzzy but it led her to Rumple’s power). Or what about when he had a fake dagger and led Belle to believe it was the real one? Now tell me, when has Belle ever LIED to Rumple like that when it comes to their relationship? If Rumple just gave up the darkness and his lust for power, none of this stuff would have happened and they would be quite happy together. So then how can you put the blame and the majority of the abuse on Belle?
November 30, 2016 at 2:00 pm #330983thedarkonedearieParticipantNope, she wanted the wand because the door of the shop was locked for the last couple of days and she knew he was in there, so he must be up to no good. “he’s closed the shop he has been in there for days, I know he is up to something” that is why she decided to work with Zelena and steal the wand.
She knew he was hanging out with the EQ and guess what, he WAS up to no good. He was helping her.

Now this is getting ridiculous. Maybe he never directly said it. But he did heavily imply it and literally everyone else around her told her that’s what he was going to do. The show wanted us to know that was his plan.
November 30, 2016 at 2:03 pm #330984thedarkonedearieParticipantAnd cheating on her with the EQ. Don’t forget that. But no, let’s blame Belle. Eye roll….

We have gotten off track, my argument is that Rumple is a not good guy or that he has not done bad things. My argument is that this season the relationship is abusive and that everyone wants to blame Rumple for all the abuse and whether you like it or not Belle has done some incredibly hurtful and “abusive” things to Rumple this season also. They are both to blame. I am not putting all the blame on Belle that would be ridiculous but she is not totally innocent in this either. That is the issue, you want to excuse all of Belle’s behaviors and say she does not have to take any responsibility for this and I am saying Nope they are both at fault this season.

She put herself under a sleeping curse because Rumple made a deal over 200 years ago about his second born child, which he thought at the time he would never have. He then thought he took care of the problem when he killed the person. I don’t know how that factors into any of this.
And cheating on her with the EQ. Don’t forget that. But no, let’s blame Belle. Eye roll….
And Belle cheating on Rumple with Will eye roll
