According to Dr. Whale, “The smallest thing can trigger your memories.” I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea. In David’s case, the windmill in Mr. Gold’s shop triggered the effects of the curse: his fairy tale story was replaced by fake memories, as Henry said. (Side note: It’s interesting that Regina Mills linked David’s false memories to a windmill).

The creators of OUAT have commented that they may have already revealed how the curse could be broken within the episodes already seen. Well, if we’ve already seen how the curse takes hold of David, perhaps the opposite is true for reversing the curse. By viewing an object connected to his false life in SB, the curse took hold in his mind. Perhaps those objects linked to SB have to be replaced by objects linked to FTL, like Emma’s mobile has to supplant the windmill. In order to do so, perhaps the windmill has to be destroyed. In the case of Graham, perhaps his link to FTL was his wolf guide, as Henry called it. In the case of Hansel and Gretel, the compass linked them to their father.

    I think you’re right.

I strongly believe if David had spent more time with Emma’s mobile, it would have triggered a FT memory in him.

I’ve also been thinking about the double entendre of “the smallest things” and the implications of multiple meanings in SB. While “smallest things” refers to the objects linked to memories (like the items in Mr. Gold’s pawn shop), it may also refer to the idea that even the “smallest things” make a difference when it comes to changing your destiny and breaking the curse. For instance, in episode 14, Nova said, “Dreamy, you control what changes in your life.” Then, in SB, we saw Leroy take it upon himself to sell candles, at first by futilely going door to door and to Mr. Gold, until he brilliantly decided to blow a fuse so that there was a power outage. He sold out of candles and saved the nuns from eviction, which is a kind of “happily ever after” (HEA) story on a small scale. Like Mr. Gold/Rumple likes to remind us, “every one has a choice” and people can take matters into their own hands. This seems to be an undercurrent, which gives reason to hope that the citizens of SB will discover their HEA. In episode 4, we heard Emma tells Ashley, “You want to change things? You’re going to have to go out there and change them yourself, because there are no fairy godmothers in this world.” In this way, Emma is helping SB citizens to change things.

I like the idea. We’ve already seen that many of the characters carried something from fairytale land: Snow’s ring, Hansel and Gretel’s compass, Emma’s blanket, jiminy’s umbrella, etc. Maybe there’s a counter device.

Why then would a kiss from Emma break Grahmn’s curse? There was no “counter device” for him unless it was Emma. Maybe it is different for everyone on how they remember.

Graham’s “counter device” was his wolf guide, according the Henry in ep. 7. I think kissing Emma was just one piece in his remembering his FTL identity.
