Thought it would be interesting to go over everything we’ve learned about this.
So apparently the darkness was going to consume all the realms, but the Sorcerer (a.k.a Merlin) battled it and managed to “tether” (is this the new “cleave”?) it to a human soul that could be controlled with a dagger. Thus, the first Dark One was born. According to the S3 episode “Quiet Minds”, this happened at the Vault of the Dark One:
Belle: The vault of the Dark One?
Lumiere: Where the first Dark One was made. Born out of… well, darkness.I do hope the writers will keep that consistent. Intrestingly Lumiere does say “made”, so maybe they planned this all along? Moving on…
At some point thousands of years ago the Sorcerer creates the hat, with the purpose of stealing magical power. Why did he do this? To contain the darkness? But in the end it wasn’t capable of that… In any case, the Hat was guarded by the Apprentice and an enchantment that prevents those who’ve given into the darkness from using it.
Several Dark Ones, including Zoso and Rumple, sought to use the Hat to cleave themselves from the dagger, while still retaining their status as the Dark One. The spell also needs the heart of someone who knew them before they were the Dark One, and for the stars in the sky to align with the stars in the Hat.
Centuries of dark deeds can blacken a Dark One’s heart so that they will lose their ability to love, and essentially die, leaving only the darkness in control – is this the ultimate victory for the darkness, what it’s planning all along? Would that render the dagger useless? Apparently the Hat can extract the darkness from the heart, though it’s unable to contain it.
If a Dark One kills themself with the dagger, they can be resurrected at the Vault at the cost of another’s life. We saw Rumple emerge from a puddle of black ooze – I guess this means that the darkness simply went back there?
True Love’s Kiss can break the Dark One curse – would this destroy the darkness or simply set it free?
Oddly, Cora claimed that if a Dark One dies without the use of the dagger, all the power would just disappear.
Cora: He’s dying. And when his name disappears, all of that power of his will just boil off into the air and then there will be no new Dark One.
Finally, the Sorcerer is supposedly the only one who can destroy the darkness once and for all. Did I miss anything? Share your thoughts below.

OMG take it back! If they start to say tether every five second in S5, I am holding you personally responsible.

Where did this human come from though? Did Merlin just pick any normal Peasant Joe and turn him into the Dark One? (seems shifty!) Or is there more? I mean, on the grand cosmological scale, the Dark One and his “fall” from grace seem pretty Lucifer-y to me. My guess is that there is a lot more to the story than the Apprentice either knows or is willing to tell. At this time, here’s my theory: The Sorcerer and the human who would become the Dark One were close–either lovers or friends or something. The Human got a little above his station, started thinking that he could be bigger and better. His ego..it grew and he became obsessed with having powers. He stockpiled them, never having enough and always wanting more. Until Merlin decided he had to do something about it and cast the Human into the <del>Pit</del> Vault of Eternal Goo and somehow caused this human to become the DArk One.

All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixMay 11, 2015 at 10:57 pm #304614MatthewPaulModeratorWhat if the darkness actually originated from Merlin? Merlin could have extracted the darkness from within himself, and then attempted to destroy it. But he could not do so. Instead he resorted to tethering the darkness to another human soul. The reason for my theory is that we already saw something like this happen with Emma and Lily. The Apprentice extracted Emma’s darkness and put it inside Lily, in order for Emma to become pure. Both incidents resulted in another vessel absorbing the darkness, because the laws of magic couldn’t just send the darkness away, according to what the Apprentice said in “Best Laid Plans.” As for why Merlin would do this himself, perhaps he needed to become pure to achieve some sort of goal. For example, maybe Merlin wanted enough power for the sole purpose of maintaining peace and protecting the realms, but he could not do so without expelling his inner darkness.
This theory of mine reminds me of something from the series Dragon Ball. In Dragon Ball, there is a character who wants to take over the position as God of the Earth, but he was initially turned down for his arrogance. Resorting to extreme measures, he expelled his inner darkness into a being named Piccolo. While he became pure enough to take over as God, Piccolo went down to Earth to terrorize all life. This God would forever regret the burden he brought upon the Earth, and would later plot in trying to get rid of Piccolo. However, because Piccolo is a part of him, he can’t kill him without dying himself.

I really like this theory! It would help explain why they introduced some of the weirder things they did this season (like Emma’s darkness being removed). Perhaps the only way to defeat the Dark One then, is if he merges back with Merlin and becomes a whole person again.
Although the Dark One seems like a LOT of darkness for one person. Perhaps it’s not just Merlins darkness anymore. Perhaps the Dark One absorbs the darkness of everyone he has “inhabited”, and has therefore grown stronger and stronger (it would explain Rumple’s white heart after the Dark One was removed).
