Okay, so I’ve just had some realizations.
Merlin was the Sorcerer. His hat had the power to suck in darkness and the ability to free the Dark One from the dagger–but at the price of the life of someone who knew them before they were the Dark One.
After going to the trouble of tethering Nimue to the Dagger in the first place, to stop her from being at her worst, why would he create such a thing? And who knew her before when she probably died–Merlin and the apprentice perhaps?
I’m thinking perhaps he created it as either a backup, the price of which was the ability free Nimue, a failed experiment (which wasn’t capable of sucking up enough darkness to free Nimue from it), or a plan in which he would eventually sacrifice himself for Nimue’s freedom.

IT DIDN’T EVEN MATCH HIS OUTFIT!!!!

Well, I doubt the hat was actually intended to be worn on his head, based on its uses.

Matt, that’s like a saying a burger was never meant to be eaten 😛 I mean if he never intended on wearing it, why make it a hat? Why not just a wand or some other magical object? Why an item of clothing? I mean in-universe, are we even sure he made it? A&E did say the hat once belonged to yensid but was passed down or something. I mean idk. But I won’t lie, I really do have a very strange emotion about the hat not even being color coordinated with his outfit, like that really bothered me.
But I guess I can accept it’s not even a hat, but just a cone shaped object that every assumes is a hat.
If anyone knows on what page the picture of Merlin wearing that hat can be found in the filming thread (I think) please let me know.

I don’t remember them saying that. But the hat was found in the Sorcerer’s Mansion which was rented (?) to Yensid. I think it just goes to show that the writers really didn’t know what they were doing with that whole plot line. Because Merlin would have still been stuck in his tree so…like how does he have a giant house that appeared in the second curse with the hat…? I don’t know.

Can’t remember that photo existing

How they got to storybrook if everything he owned was in Camelot?
I’m pretty sure that they never planned what to do with these things, they just drop them on us for plot.

It was photoshopped, I was joking about how Merlin had better wear the hat at least once and someone actually photoshopped a picture of merlin wearing the hat. Hilarity ensued.

I’ll try to find it, but they said something to that effect, that the could have been passed down to merlin from yen

Actually, Yensid was listed as the landowner of the Apprentice’s house, not the Sorcerer’s Mansion.

Ah, yes. You’re right. Though, we’re still left with the question of why Merlin had a house in the second curse when not the first–both times he was SticksVille
