You know, Regina could have cast a spell on Belle’s family to make them think she was dead too rather than Rumple and that way he could have gone to check the facts and found them exactly the way she said them to be. I somehow find it more plausible that she spelled them than that she spelled Rumple. I also think he probably doesn’t know she’s alive since I feel like he’d definitely have tried to get her back if he did and he wouldn’t have beaten Moe up like that if he knew he had nothing to do with it :/

What really bothers me with the whole Moe thing, is that it took him so long to do it? The time started flowing months ago and yet he goes against Moe in that moment?? The storytellers should’ve built up something. Seems rather random. =/
I think what triggered the whole beating scenario was the burglary. Gold repo’ed Moe’s van, but that was pretty much all in a day’s work for Mr. Gold. Regina used that to manipulate Moe into stealing from Gold, and it was the stealing of the cup that set Gold off and made him go all Preston Brooks on Moe. (A cookie for anybody who gets that reference! 😀 )
I think the timing was all on Regina. She saw an opportunity to use Moe, and she really wanted to figure out if Gold knew who he really was. Maybe also wanted to see how emotionally invested he still was in Belle.
As for How Rumpel didn’t know–I’ll buy Nightreader’s theory that EQ locked Belle up and spelled her family to believe the suicide story. OR maybe she got Belle’s father to flee and go into hiding, telling him that Rumpel was coming after him. Then if R went looking for Belle he would have found her father’s estate abandoned, which would fit the scenario. Gold definitely believes she’s dead. When he said “she’s gone forever–she’s not coming back” I think he meant not in this world or any world. It also explains shy Rumpel didn’t care if the whole world got cursed. He really had nothing to lose. Or so he thought.

Ok, I get that that makes sense. Nightreader’s theory is good. It really would’ve made no sense (Is there another expression for “to make sense”???) if Rumple hadn’t checked the story.
March 1, 2012 at 9:51 pm #138018ciela_crowParticipantI don’t think that Rumple knows about Belle. Whenever Regina told him that Belle was dead, he was feeling alot of emotion. He was depressed, angry, heartbroken, and on his guard, wondering what Regina would do next to try and steal his power. Regina IS a pretty good liar, so maybe he just decided to believe her. So he can get any chance of Belle coming back to him out of his mind. He really hurt Belle when he said “I care more about my powers then you” and she really hurt him whenever she called called him a coward. That probably brought back bad memories from before he was the dark one, and therefore he had a lot of things on his mind whenever Regina gave him a little visit. I think believing that Belle was dead would have been the easiest option, seeing that Regina isn’t really someone you would want to go up against. And retrieving Belle would have been hard, and he might not have known if it would be worth it.
As to the queen putting a spell on Rumplestiltskin, its possible, but not likely. Rumple is very smart, and i’m sure he would have noticed if a spell was cast on him. If the evil queen was prancing around my house telling me my loved one was dead and making tea like a pro, I would be keeping a watchful eye on her.

March 2, 2012 at 4:49 pm #138042rumplegoldfankristiParticipantHas anyone gone back and watched the EQ make her tea? Someone please humor me and go back and watch it. Like I said, I don’t know if I buy that she’s doing a spell but, seriously, what the heck IS she doing???? That is the most flamboyant display of preparing a cup of tea I have ever seen. And then when poor Rumple wants to know what tragedy has befallen dear Belle, suddenly EQ is all coy, sucking on her teaspoon like “Are you talking too little ‘ol me?”. I think it may be the most bizarre background action I’ve ever seen. Is she shoeing away horse flies?? The pot wasn’t steaming so I don’t think she needed to do gymnastics to wave away the steam. Tossing her sugar cubes in from a distance as target practice?? Creative wrist action whilst squeezing her lemon?? Then after all that, SHE DOESN’T EVEN DRINK THE FREAKING TEA.
This has been driving me CRAZY!!!!!!
March 2, 2012 at 5:28 pm #138044nightreaderParticipantI went back and watched it just now and I’ll agree that after she put the lumps in she does the weirdest hand movement that was definitely not necessary :/ It looked kinda like she was swatting something away or maybe picking a hair out of her tea or something. Definitely odd, but I still doubt she was putting a spell on him.
March 2, 2012 at 7:27 pm #138054ciela_crowParticipantI haven’t gone back and rewatched the part where she was making the tea. The first time I watched “Skin Deep”, though, I thought she was examining the chipped cup. Because how did she know that the chipped cup was special to Rumple? If she didn’t know about the special connection between Rumple and that cup wouldn’t she just steal his cane or money or something like that? Or did she just happen to see the cup on one of her “breaking into people’s houses” trips and remembered it from his house in fairytale land?

That’s a really good question. I have been going on the assumption that she had Moe steal an assortment of things and then made sure that Emma recovered everything but the cup, as part of her attempt to determine if Gold knew who he was. If it was just another object, then it is unlikely that Gold would have noticed, or if he did (meticulous person that he is) he would not have gotten his knickers in a twist over one broken piece of china. As I said, I assumed Regina held that out as a test, and then knew she could use it as a bargaining chip (pardon the pun) to get him to admit his name.
BUT how on earth would she know the significance of the cup? I don’t see Rumple sitting down with her over tea and getting misty-eyed as he explained why the cup somehow reminded him of his lost love. I suppose she might have been back to the dark castle and seen it on its pedestal and realized it was important to him without really knowing why. I might just post this as a separate topic because now it is going to bug me until I can come up with a good explanation!
March 2, 2012 at 8:02 pm #138066nightreaderParticipantI think she probably just saw it on the pedestal and knew that it meant something to him. In fact, since he had the goblet there first but exchanged it for the cup after Belle it’s likely that she noticed the change the next time she was there and figured that it was something that reminded him of her.
