I think the hosts were asking about this in last episode’s podcast, and it made an appearance again this week. It’s the Hotel Europe, in Vancouver:

Which is funny, because the Flatiron Building is actually nowhere near SoHo/Little Italy, where Bae’s neighborhood was shown. The entire area in Vancouver they used to double for NYC is called Gastown. I was actually able to locate where Neal’s apartment (the exterior at least) was filmed thanks to Google Maps. It’s the middle red bricked building with the green framing.
After a little research, I discovered that this building is apparently a homeless shelter called The Dugout. Kinda amusing, considering Neal was homeless for quite some time. More information can be found there:

Sadly, yes. I do think they might have filmed in the real NYC for the Season premiere, when you see Neal walking home. As a NY state native myself, I’d say pizza is good in NYC almost wherever you go. To recreate the Neal and Henry pizza experience as close as possible, though, I would eat somewhere in Little Italy.

I guess they have limited options for landmarks in Vancouver that could double as landmarks in NYC, and that building may have been the closest. But yeah, then why make it look like SoHo? It’s not a million miles away from the Flatiron District, but still, wouldn’t it have been more believable to have him living in Chelsea, or even Greenwich? (Map of Manhattan neighbourhoods to get your bearings: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5a/Manhattan_neighborhoods.png )
Actually, Greenwich could have been fun, so everyone could have freaked out about him having a connection to Oz. 😆 Ooooo, wait up, which London neighbourhoods are related to Peter Pan? *googles madly*
– The original stage production took place at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London, on 27 December 1904.
– The Duke of York’s Theatre is a West End Theatre in St Martin’s Lane, in the City of Westminster.
– Soho is an area of the City of Westminster and part of the West End of London. Now, that theatre is actually just outside the boundaries of Soho, but only just. Also, the Great Ormond Street Hospital, (who own the rights to Peter Pan) is in a nearby neighbourhood, just northeast of Soho.
Like I said, if they wanted to show Nealfire living near the Flatiron Building, then the neighbourhood of Chelsea would make more sense, because it’s right there. Chelsea is also a neighbourhood in London, but it’s in a whole different area of the city, away from Soho, that theatre, and that hospital.
So if NealfirePAN had a choice in NYC of a few nearby neighbourhoods, SoHo would totally be the one he’d pick! 😉 You see, it’s not a case of “they don’t know their NYC geography properly,” it’s a case of, “something seems off here, which means it’s gotta be a clue.” I’m onto you and your tricksy ways, Adam and Eddy! 😉

The pizza IS a lie! They call their signature flavour the SwanQueen special. 😛
March 5, 2013 at 7:46 pm #177409spinninggoldParticipantI think the flat iron building could have been a computer animation added later… I have this nagging feeling I saw a “Magic behind the Movies” series that had that building in it, and it was the first thing I thought when I saw it. So they have it in the computer somewhere and can just add it in to cover something up. Just like the belltower in Storybrooke is fake.
March 5, 2013 at 8:43 pm #177411TheGoldenKeyParticipantLocation, location, location as they say. The Flatiron Building is a NY City Icon that is synonymous with the city. One can’t help but immediately think of NY City when seeing it. Because Hotel Europe is the same architectural design of the Flatiron Bldg and Gas Town closely resembles SoHo NY, it’s a location that is are quite often used to mimic NY City in films and TV.
Vancouver is known as Hollywood North and any film location scout will immediately go to Gastown, particularly Powell St., if a NY City atmosphere is what they are looking for. It’s just something that is widely known within the Canadian film industry.

The signage of course has been changed to resemble a real NYC street. Hot Pie Pizza is the place they specifically went to.
