Don’t know if this was mentioned already…but here’s a crackpot theory.
First of all, I’m a Neal=Bae fan personally, so I’m not discrediting that theory… or the theory that Neal=Bae=Peter Pan.
But what if Neal is the White Rabbit, and Cora’s heart is in August’s box?
First, back to 2×06.
The reason I thought of this was because Jane Espenson tweeted some clues about what was in the box after Tallahassee. She said it was “big…shiny…red…”
Of course, she could have been joking. “Big, red, and shiny” is a common expression that can be used to describe something unattainable. But if we take her literally, then it brings up some theories people have already mentioned about what could be in the box. This includes Dorothy’s ruby slippers and, well, hearts.
But the next obvious question is:
Why the heck would a heart force Neal to listen to August’s story?
THAT’S where the heart theory originally ran into trouble, because just any old heart wouldn’t be enough to convince Neal to ditch Emma. Some people argued that it could be Neal’s own heart in the box. But what if it was someone else’s?
There might be clues to this conundrum in Neal’s NYC apartment. A while ago there were a lot of theories pointing out that Neal could be the White Rabbit. Some clues included: his obsession with clocks (and watches), his waist coat, the monocle hanging by his door, the spectacles on his desk, and later in Tallahassee, that he was “late, late, for a very important date” (making Emma wait for him by the parking garage). Other really strange clues include the poster of a heart by his open window, a picture of a red hand next to his door, and of course, the massive “CLEANERS AND HATTERS” sign on the wall.
Now we know he’s Henry’s father. But what if he is also the White Rabbit?
From Alice in Wonderland, we know the White Rabbit is a servant of the Queen of Hearts. We also know, from the original story, that he can “travel” between our world (Alice’s world) and Wonderland via a rabbit hole, while the QoH cannot. (At least not easily.)
Could it be possible that Cora sent Neal to our world to hide her heart? Maybe Neal hides it away, but August finds it. Then in Tallahassee, we see the tragedy unfold: August shows him the heart and Neal is forced to listen to his story, and eventually, leave Emma.
Also, he does nothing to stop Emma from breaking the curse because, like August, the Queen of Hearts wants the curse to be broken. So apart from leaving the love of his life, he is, in fact, doing the “right” thing.
Again, I’m sorry if somebody already posted this. I admit it’s a crazy theory, but maybe the writers have something really shocking planned. 😆

December 9, 2012 at 7:02 pm #164205tiara_roseParticipantI love the theory that he is the White Rabbit. When he was younger ( 16 or 17). He tried to get back to the enchanted forest and found a way to Wonderland, where he found the queen of hearts. I think thst he knows already everything rip hearts out, cause he seen it already by his dead. To survive the queen, he became a servant and found Jeffererson, who toldhim stories of the dark One, without knowing about Baelfire. He told him how Rumple try to create a monster, to get a curse work that will destroy many lives, because than they have to go to a land without magic and without happy endings. But Jeff added that propably it is not possibile, because the Dark One tries this since 300 years and still it doesn’t work.
I thought that Neal maybe introduced Jefferson even to Alice (she followed Neal, because they were in the same forster system). Jefferson and Alice fell in love, but Neal told Jefferson, as long he needs magic, there will be no happy ending for them. The three of them get the chance to runaway from the queen through a portal, but Bealfire didn’t get with them and goes back to our world. Knowing that his father is lost, and there is no place for him in the enchanted forest or in our world and get lost to. Only trying to survive and have a little fun.Years later his stolen car get stolen from Emma…
And August show him a enchanted heart and he know that he has the responsibility to stop the curse and let Emma go.Heros don't get their Happy Ending!

This also gives me hope that Peter Pan can still be a boy and not a grown man, wich is just wrong in my mind.Naomi

This is the first time i’ve heard of this, very exiting !
December 9, 2012 at 11:10 pm #164290craxyfoxParticipantI really like this theory 🙂 The rabbit and his watch, of all the things Neal had to steal, they were watches, so that makes sense to me!
It’s great to see more theories behind who Neal might be besides the big elephant theory that he’s Bae. I just think that it would be waay too easy for the writers to serve Neal up on a silver platter as Bae, it just feels too easy.
Unless he is both Bae and the White Rabbit then at least that would be interesting.December 10, 2012 at 12:17 am #164296maiqu20Participant@craxyfox wrote:

Now Bae + the White Rabbit now that i can believe a little more..because IF he is Bae I’m expecting there to be an extra twitst something unexpected
All the clues for him being the WR are there
the spectacles on the desk, the hatters sign, the heart in the room (or heart decoration), the big ben poster (alice is a british story), the meaning behind him taking Emma to Storybrooke through Henry (thanks to him Henry exists and Henry took Emma to SB just as the WR took Alice to Wonderland)
December 10, 2012 at 12:28 am #164299gypsyParticipantI wasn’t a fan of Neal being the White Rabbit, mainly because I am on team Neal (Henry’s father)/Bae/PP.
And, I considered Jefferson to represent the WR because he is the realm jumper….he leads ppl ‘down rabbit holes’ to other worlds….Regina left the calling card for Jefferson on Paige/Grace’s bike…..a White Rabbit Tarot card.
But, I like your theory – it is really well thought out and it does make a lot of sense 🙂
December 10, 2012 at 3:38 am #164310zlfh4ParticipantI love this theory!! I thought he might be the WR too after seeing the season premier but I want him to be Bae however if he could be both that would be awesome….this just popped into my head and it is probably crazy but what if he was Bae, Peter Pan, and the White Rabbit. I just wondered what if the Blue Fairy found a way to get a message to Bae or Bae alone and on his own in our world runs into Smee or Hook, probably Hook in the real world, because Smee needs to travel to that world to procure something that maybe someone had hidden or needed to hide something there. I am sure there are a million scenarios the writers could come up with, and he recognizes Hook from the bar. He decides to eavesdrop, hears something that makes him want to stow away on his ship either about his dad or jumping worlds, because he wants to get back to his father, and winds up in Neverland. The feud ensues for whatever reason…and Bae aka peter pan thinks at some point that he has found a way to the enchanted forest and winds up in wonderland instead and then somehow he becomes the WR. I just really want him to be Bae too and i really like the Peter Pan theory too…but i think the clues in his apt point to the WR the most..
December 10, 2012 at 8:00 am #164328tiara_roseParticipantzlfh4: I don’t think he also is Peter Pan, but he could be, so please keep on with your ideas.
Maybe in the end you will be right guessing.Heros don't get their Happy Ending!
December 10, 2012 at 12:02 pm #164335SlurpeezParticipantIt’s a thoughtful theory and there seem to be lots of clues like the monocles, the hatter sign, and the watches that Neal stole in 2×6. Yet, I think the white rabbit is too minor a character to be Henry’s dad. Maybe Neal is Baelfire, who is like the white rabbit in sense that he traveled through a portal to a new world, which is like a ‘wonderland’ with its modern technology and lack of magic. Our world would seem strange to a kid from the EF in a similar way to how the actual Wonderland was strange to Alice (who was from our world).
