.. OTHER SIDE OF MIRROR clued me into the fact Carlisle Pa is the home of Army War College.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlisle,_Pennsylvania
In Carlisle Pa there is an Army War College… my theory is that Greg/ Ben is in the Army as INTELLIGENCE OFFICER aka CIA — he is part of a division to find and utilize alternate technology, be it magical, alien or paranormal…. It is just that he knew about STORYBROOKE and that magic existed so now he is trying to capitalize on it… if he is unable to use it for his own benefit… he will be out to destroy it.
His motive for destroying magic…. it killed his father.

Greg has returned to Storybrooke to find his father. He has no interest in the magic unlike Tamara. Greg was amazed at all the magic that was happening so I doubt he wants to destroy it. I don’t think Greg is in the army or CIA. He’s just an average Joe looking for his father.
All magic comes with a price!

.Nice find! I’ve always subscribed to the theory that Greg was a non-FTL character just as he appeared to be, so I was sure he had to have a bit more kick than just being a regular joe, otherwise what kind of threat could he pose to people who can wield magic, huh? Of course, the best I could find prior to this little bit was the FBI main headquarters being on Pennsylvania AVENUE in Washington, DC, a connection not strong enough to work on a theory. 🙂
And a job on the US Intelligence does fit a big nerd like Greg. I’ll even add that it’s a connection that he probably shares with Tamara; she did say she analyzed the contents of the Dragon’s potion with the most sophisticated techniques available to men (the US Army have to have them to deal with biological warfare) and she has an impressive anti-magical taser (no way she developed that alone).
Not sure about CIA, though. Isn’t it a civillian intelligence agency, more involved with foreign affairs than domestic ones? Non-American here, so an honest question.
PS: Maybe you should post this or move this to the General Discussions thread. Not sure many people will see your theory on a forum dedicated to a past episode. 🙂

I don’t think Greg’s desire to find his father and a possible job at the Army are mutually exclusive. He knew the town was not what it appeared to be, so it’s only natural that he’d be sure to have powerful resources available to him when he finally manages to get inside again.
March 31, 2013 at 12:46 am #183409timespacerParticipantClever point about the Army War College. And I definitely agree that Tamara must have some large organization (whether private or government) backing her in order to perform the kinds of tests she described and to produce techno-toys like the one she wielded against August and The Dragon. Such activities would be way outside the role of the Army War College itself, but Greg might have some indirect affiliation. While most of their students are active-duty military, they do have a small fraction of civilian students from other organizations like the State Department and the NSA. They also host a lot of conferences and symposia which bring in all kinds of experts in various fields. Greg could be either a student or a visiting academic.
Demileto, you are right that the CIA is a civilian agency and is restricted by U.S. law to dealing with foreign affairs so it’s unlikely Greg would have a CIA connection. Also, CIA headquarters is in Virginia, not Pennsylvania. If he’s with the government, I would guess Greg is with the FBI or more likely some super-secret fictional agency. I just had a crazy idea! In “Welcome to Storybrooke”, Owen’s dad told him to call his uncle after he escaped from Storybrooke. Maybe Owen/Greg is the Man From U.N.C.L.E.! (I heard someone is preparing a remake of that show.) I’d love to see a cameo by Robert Vaugn or David McCallum!

I don’t see Greg having ulterior motives other than finding his father (though I can see him being xenophobic to the Storybrookers because of it), so I like the idea of him being merely a visiting academic or student. The Army War College, incidentally, could be how Greg met Tamara. One of the traits mentioned in her casting call and that we have yet to see something come out of it was that she’s a born leader, and it just happens that teaching leadership and strategy is one of the College’s duties.

.March 31, 2013 at 1:18 pm #183452nonnieParticipantI know they will probably not have a real government agency but how about one of the MARVEL COMIC style government agencies? I would accept a psuedo agency.
Greg would be a perfect quasi undercover agent… look at his short hair and in your face demeanor when dealing with Regina. The more I think of it the better I liked it.
The other day I had a dream about army tanks surrounding STORYBROOKE… I woke up to see jeeps & tanks going down our road from the National Guard unit going on maneuvers… gave me a start.

There’s a thread over in the General Discussion section discussing OUAT dreams. It’s at:

Didn’t know anything about the War College.
