The showrunners break down the midseason finale and reveal which new Disney characters will be introduced in 2018.
While the seventh season of Once Upon a Time rebooted the series with a new story, new location, and new cast (only three series regulars returned), it’s not the first time the fairy tale series has taken a dramatic turn.
“Every year’s a new show for Once Upon a Time,” co-creator Edward Kitsis told The Hollywood Reporter. “One year we were in Camelot, one year we were in the Underworld, one we were in Neverland, once we were in New York. So, every year we’re kind of recreating a new show.”
Now, at midseason, Kitsis and co-creator Adam Horowitz told THR they’ve begun to work out the kinks in their new format, which saw the characters living in Seattle under a curse that made them forget their fairy tale alter-egos. Slowly some have woken up from the curse, which turned out to be cast by Regina (Lana Parrilla) and not Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar), Drizella (Adelaide Kane), or Mother Gothel (Emma Booth), as previous episodes led viewers to believe.
The midseason finale revealed that even though Regina is awake, she still can’t break the curse—because it means that Henry (Andrew J. West) will die. But if she doesn’t find another way to break it, Henry’s daughter Lucy (Alison Fernandez) will die. To find a way to break it without anyone dying, she tracked down her sister, Zelena (returning regular Rebecca Mader, who will recur in the second half of the season).
“We love Rebecca. We missed writing for her,” Horowitz told THR. Zelena, it turns out, has been living in San Francisco as a spin instructor named Kelly, a character who was originally conceived with an American accent (thanks to a funny impression Mader did over lunch). “We love Zelena,” Horowitz continued. “Zelena is a character that does so many different things in that she can be powerful, evil, good, complicated and funny and we wanted to use Rebecca’s amazing talent to do everything. We wanted to give her a really fun entrance.”

Um no. Location = / = new show. Your show–meaning character motivations, themes, motifs, symbols, and mythology–should be pretty consistent even in the face of a new location. That’s called writing.

I can’t figure out what Disney Lore means. I assume it means Mal, Ursula, Cruella, and basically any big bad lady from Disney classic films, most of whom have been featured at some point over the past six years. But there’s also the report that they are bringing in a character from the Haunted Mansion attraction which hopefully means they’re expanding their lens outside of classic fairy tale cartoons. I just don’t know if there are seven non-movie witches to be had?

– Madame Mim – Sword in the Stone
– Yzma – Emperor’s New Groove
– Queen Narisa – Enchanted
– Mama Odie – Princess and the Frog
– Eglantine Price –
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
– Sanderson Sisters – Hocus Pocus
– Queen Jades/the White Witch – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (although I’m not sure about the status of Disney’s rights for that)– Could we possibly dip into Marvel with characters like Lorelei and Scarlet Witch? I wouldn’t put it past them.
– Outside of Disney, we never met Morgana or Morgan Le Fey.
– I wonder if “witches” from Disney’s new acquisition of Fox media could now be used?
– My last thought is that if they use the term “witch” loosely, Dr. Facilier being one of them could make a lot of sense.

That one is probably a given since Tiana is a prominent feature of the show now.
Queen Jades/the White Witch – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (although I’m not sure about the status of Disney’s rights for that)
I remember having this conversation when we learned Lucy’s name back in S6B; I don’t think Disney has any rights to the Lewis works/movies about the books at this point.

They *could* technically but oooh boy do I think that’d be a mistake.
Outside of Disney, we never met Morgana or Morgan Le Fey
I’ve always wanted Morgana so that’s a really good guess; and with Madame Mim as a potential then there’s two characters with some shared history.

yes I wondered how strict they are keeping to the word “witch.”

PREACH! Guess that explains why characters became so unrecognisable as themselves, the writers really were just focused on location and plot, rather than being interested in creating a believable, consistent world.

The article says…
The end of the episode revealed that while Drizella thought it was her plan to curse everyone, Mother Gothel had been pulling the strings the whole time thanks to her “Coven of the Eight,” a group of eight witches that Horowitz and Kitsis said we’ll meet in the second half of the season. (Regina and Zelena, of course, are two members.)
They don’t have that last bit in quotes though, so is that actually something that A&E did confirm in the interview, or is it just something the writer of the article assumed and stuck in there? There were 5 hooded witches standing behind Gothel when she came to get the statue of Drizella, that’s 7 of them in total that were standing there. That only leaves one vacancy, there’s not space for both Regina and Zelena.
and how do you tell somebody that you were once the wicked witch?
And that you only have a daughter because you raped your sister’s true love. Whoever Kelly’s fiancee is, I feel bad for the poor guy.
It’s always a balance between your plans and the realities of how production works. We have a lot of new locations and we’re in the city, so there’s a lot of figuring out what kinds of stories we could tell versus what our plans were. That’s always a balancing act.”
Guys, this isn’t the first time you’ve had to deal with production schedules for a show. You’ve even shot episodes of this very show in the big bad city before. “How production works” is not an acceptable excuse for a hot mess when it comes to storytelling in the 7th season of your show!!!! OMG! *bashes head repeatedly into desk*

I totally missed that but that doesn’t make a lick of sense. We saw the other Witches during the Curse ceremony, yes? And Zelena and Regina were not part of the Coven; they were the opponents.
That quote seems to suggest that the other 6 members of the Coven are up for debate and not solid/set in stone, only Gothel and Ana seem to be permanent. But doesn’t that really undercut the whole “family of Witches” theme Gothel was going for?!

8 hooded figures, yes.
Gothel and Drizella were 2 of them.
Henry ended up being 1 of them.
So technically there were 7 hooded witches, plus Henry.
Re-watching it, (you really shouldn’t need to re-watch scenes a bunch of times in order to understand what’s going on), Drizella does imply that Regina is the 8th. When Regina’s saying how a Curse takes ingredients, Drizella says it takes 8, and she has 7, but the last was the hardest to find, and that was the magic she needed from Regina.
So fine, Regina’s one of the 8. But there’s still no room for Zelena in that equation, so that article needs to shut up.
December 17, 2017 at 10:29 am #345202MatthewPaulModeratorYou know, I was ALMOST expecting them to reveal that Wish Realm Regina was one of the hooded witches. But on the other hand, do we really need yet another dueling Reginas storyline?
