Co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis talk to THR about Emma’s mission to find Hook, the rules of the underworld and characters making a comeback in the second half.
[Warning: this story contains spoilers from Once Upon a Time’s season five winter finale, “Swan Song.”]Hell hath no fury like a Savior scorned. In Once Upon a Time’s winter finale, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) was forced to kill her love, Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), to save Storybrooke from the underworld, but in a huge twist, she ended up going down there anyway.
Once she discovered that Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) channeled all of the Dark Ones’ magic into himself, she demanded that he take her down to the underworld to save Hook, and in the final moments of the finale, the whole gang — including Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), David (Josh Dallas), Regina (Lana Parrilla), Robin Hood (Sean Maguire), and Rumple — headed on a rescue mission.
THRspoke with co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis to discuss the second half of the season, and they revealed details about Emma’s quest for Hook, the familiar face ruling the underworld, and if characters like Zelena will be returning next year. Plus, the bosses also break their silence on whether star Emilie de Ravin’s pregnancy may be written into the show now that Rumple and Belle have rekindled their love.

Kitsis: I would say it certainly looked like they re-consummated their marriage, so we’ll just have to wait and see, but I would say you’re definitely on the right clue trail.
Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly flip anymore tables. They are really going to do it. They are going to write in EdR’s pregnancy and make *this* baby be reason that Rumple finally decides to redeem himself. Neal himself wasn’t enough. Neal’s death wasn’t enough. Belle wasn’t enough. Losing Belle wasn’t enough.Being banished wasn’t enough. Being Hat-Sucked and transformed wasn’t enough. But a brand new shiny baby…well HOT DOG!

So Guinevere is going to remain in her her mind controlled raped state until they’ll “have the time” to deal with it? When? Before or after the search of Lily’s father? Or before or after they explain the reason why Will is in Storybrooke?
Poor Guinevere. If people didn’t think they had a problem with POC before, well…"All your questions are pointless"
What about Arthur? Is he gone, or will we see him come back?
Kitsis: There’s potential. We know there’s still Arthur and Merida and Guinevere in Storybrooke, so we may see them a little bit at the end of the year, but not for a while.

No but really. You’re just going to pretend they never existed, right? They’re running around Forgotten Character Island and you’re really hoping that I don’t notice that you never sent them back to the EF or that Guinevere is still being MindRaped or that Arthur is a mustache twirling villain.
Will we see Hook’s half brother come into play? He was briefly mentioned when Hook killed his father in flashbacks.
Horowitz: You mean Liam 2? (Laughs.)
Kitsis: I can tell you we will definitely see Liam 1, but whether we see Liam 2 is up in the air.

Horowitz: It’s not hell. The underworld isn’t hell — it is a place between. It’s the place for people with unfinished business, so it’s not about good or evil.
First of all, they say its not Hell, yet the characters on the show itself keep calling it so? Second of all, the Underworld is not the one set destination for the dead, but a sort of purgatory for select people good or bad? I guess the later is how they plan to get around avoiding certain characters they can’t get back like Neal and Graham. A Young Baelfire was spotted filming with Rumple and Milah, but it could have just been for a flashback and not for the present day Underworld.

Am I missing something? They needed “the blood of a man who had been to Hell and back” to open the portal, twice. It’s not Hell? It’s Purgatory?
In 5×11 Swan Song:
Regina: “…but do you really think that dragging her family to the Underworld is the answer?”
Hook: “This from the woman who enacted the Dark Curse to punish Snow White for telling a secret. You of all people should know how far someone will go for revenge. And unfortunately for you, so do all the people you’ve killed who are waiting for you in Hell.”

Emma: “The Underworld.”
Charming: “That’s quite a distinction.”
Am I just being picky? From what I remember from Greek Mythology, the Underworld contains multiple realms, one of which being Elysian Fields (pleasant), another was Tartarus (not pleasant). Yet Rumple refers to the Underworld being torturous, making you wish for fire and brimstone. So… someone help me out. They’re calling it Hell, but just kidding, it’s not Hell, but maybe later it might be Hell… when they feel like it?Keeper of Regina's book of magic

It would be nice if this were more about spoilers and less about having to explain what they failed to explain in the show’s canon.
Where they seem to be coming from with Rumple’s choices…makes a little more sense now. It made NONE in the ep.
I’m on board with a Belle pregnancy IF it means screentime for her. If not, just…no.
