Tonight we saw a bit of Tiana’s backstory. What did you think of the changes made to Disney’s “Princess and the Frog”? What do you think happens to Tiana now–how does she end up the leader of the rebellion, for instance?

They kinda took a bit from the movie, and a bit from the Grimm version, mashed them up and did something new. Apart from the structure of the kingdom making zero sense, I liked the rest of it fine.

I figure she takes up leadership of the Resistance as a way of honouring her father the war hero.

I still think they aren’t explaining how the hierarchy of the kingdom exists. Like Tiana is a princess, but they keep talking about the king who is throwing the ball for the prince, and talking about how the king isn’t taking care of the people, but then Tiana is also royalty. Is Cinderella a princess too? All that just seems weird and just annoying because this storyline should have been with Snow and Charming and the Evil Queen, Regina.

I wasn’t over-the-moon about this take on the Princess and the Frog. I also wasn’t crazy about how Tiana and her mother at first just wanted her to get married. Yet, I was pleased that Tiana came to her senses and realized she didn’t need anyone but herself to fight back. I thought it was a positive message that she could be her own hero, but how she got to that realization was a bit clumsy since she just gave Dr. Facilier exactly what he needed to reek havoc and terrorize her and the kingdom.

I much preferred Sabine in HH! Despite being cursed, her resistance and free-spirit really shined through and stood in sharp contrast with Jacinda’s cowardly defeatism and very negative attitude. I think Sabine is a natural leader, a heroine, and someone to really root for — unlike Jacinda, who  just seems passive, helpless, weak, scared and downtrodden even when not cursed. I get the sense that if it weren’t for Tiana and Henry that Ella never would have gotten anywhere in the EF 2.0 but would have just remained under Lady Tremaine’s thumb forever.

Ok I have not watch it yet. Honestly scared too. However if I recalled the Princess in the Princess and the Frog Grimm version did not want a prince however simply wanted her beloved prize golden ball which she she made pact with the Frog to obtain it for her. She wasn’t looking for marriage and neither was Tiana. Anyway I may watch it tonight or tomorrow… le sigh…

Yup, she made a deal with a frog to fetch her golden ball out of a pond on the condition that she let him eat off her plate and sleep on her pillow. After she got the ball back, she blew him off. Eventually she let him eat off her plate and sleep on her pillow for 3 nights, and that broke his curse and turned him back into a Prince.

So they took the thing of her being a Princess, and the association with a single golden valuable object, and used that as part of the show’s version.
