This was a beautiful episode timeline wise, lots of intersections. But there is some ambiguity as to whether the backstory is pre- or post- the events of The Doctor (and one person even suggested it could come in between those events, but I don’t see how).
So. I’m asking here for arguments either way. My current inclination is that Tink happens after they try to resurrect Daniel, cuz up till that point Regina believed her magic could be used to restore him. She’s lost all hope at the point she meets Tink.

It’s only after realizing that she’ll never bring back Daniel that Regina fully immerses herself in Rumple’s teaching and magic. At first scene of the flashback shows that she isn’t wholly open and ready for magic. I think QACF and the Doctor are VERY close in time, though. So in my head:
–Regina pushes Cora through the mirror and marries the King beings to learn magic
–Regina doesn’t take the magic seriously yet because still doesn’t want the power or to turn into Cora
–Regina misses a lesson with Rumple
–Regina meets Tink
–Events of 303
–Regina renews her efforts to learn magic from Rumple like we saw in the Doctor. Also notice the costume change. She’s stopped wearing all white and is wearing more brown. She’s losing hope quite rapidly.
–The events of the Dotor
–Regina takes her first heart, donning her black EQ outfits.

As far as the Regina question, I agree with RG. Costumes give it away IMO. In 303 she’s in all white, at the start of The Doctor she’s in browns, and by the end of that ep, she’s all black from that point on.

In the doctor she sounded sweet and did not have any sass, but than in this one, her voice was lower, and was quite nasty to Tinker Bell. I think it is between. She also wore the brown outfit when she tired to escape after she pushed her mother in the mirror.
I am a nerd at heart.

And while the costumes are a major data point…they’re not infallible. Besides, she doesn’t switch to all black (in my mind) until Leopold dies. Then there’s that exchange with (was it the mirror?) where she says she simply finds that black suits her.
And even then she wears plenty of dark jewel tones.
But I will say that of all her awesome and fabulous dresses, 303’s is the prettiest by far.

October 16, 2013 at 5:06 am #216280PriceofMagicParticipantIn the Doctor, after Regina took her first heart, Rumple met up with Whale and told him he’d made his monster. I doubt Whale would’ve hung around longer than necessary in the EF which would mean this episode was either before or after the Doctor.
Regina used her EQ voice when she told Tinkerbell to leave and she definitely began having dark thoughts about Snow without being horrified by them. I would say this was probably after the Doctor because Rumple said to bring her anger to the next lesson whereas she wasn’t angry when we saw her in the Doctor.
All magic comes with a price!

She switched permanently to black when Leo dies. Before then wearing all black was a private thing to indicate her darkening heart and her tend toward loving magic.

But voice was only the EQ voice for the last few seconds of her interaction with Tink. Before then she had “young Regina” voice. Then after Tink left she probably switched back because this was her first big step toward becoming full time EQ

I’m still not convinced that 303 Regina is more innocent than 205 Regina…

Well I don’t think the two are far apart. Like 205 is the next morning after Regina had her fight with Tinkerbell. She’s recovered from the previous nights fear and panic enough to go to her magic lesson but it affected her enough for her to give up wearing all white.

I agree with this sequence of events. After Regina refused to meet Robin Hood, she said her rage was all she had. She was afraid to love and possibly lose that love again. She said she couldn’t let go of Daniel. Instead, she reverted to anger which had been eating away ever since Snow “had her fiancee killed” and Regina then went back to Rumple the next morning. Her motivation was clear in 2×5: to bring back the stable boy to life. From a storytelling perspective, it makes sence sequentially first to have Regina consider moving on with someone else only for her to go running back to a dead corpse. Very Regina.
