Her motivation was clear in 2×5: to bring back the stable boy to life. From a storytelling perspective, it makes sence sequentially first to have Regina consider moving on with someone else only for her to go running back to a dead corpse. Very Regina.
This is very true. 303 is a reminder that she lost Daniel and 205 shows the consequences of that: she’s more determined than ever to figure out if Rumple (or anyone) can bring him back.
Okay: Rumple’s speech to Regina.
Regina: I’m not sure I want a future that looks like you.
Rumple: (some other stuff) The darkness has tasted you, and it likes how you taste.
Would she have bought this before taking the apprentice’s heart? Before that moment, I don’t think we’ve seen Regina actually kill. Her heart wasn’t dark even when she threw her mother through the mirror.
Oh, and Rumple indicates at that point that she doesn’t really have a choice in her magic studies; while he was pulling strings all over in the Doctor, he was still giving her the illusion of a choice in the matter. And cuts her off when she’s not willing to go all the way with what he really wants–someone capable of casting the Curse, which requires heart pulling.
Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. My spreadsheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6r8CySCCWd9R0RUNm4xR3RhMEU/view?usp=sharing

But her heart began to darken when she pushed Cora through that mirror and she admits to Rumple that she LIKED the feeling of power and using magic.

Hm. I have no response to this one.
