Looks great, kranen, well done again.

That banner hanging in the background, that thing on it which I assume is gonna be some coat-of-arms something or other…does that look like it could be a black creature with tentacles to anyone else?

Yes and it’s wearing a crown. I….have questions. (is it 306 yet?)

    Can’t be a coincidence.

So Eric’s kingdom likely has an allegiance to Ursula the sea goddess. Ursula grants mermaids legs once a year. So I’m guessing it probably won’t be a secret from Eric that Ariel’s a mermaid?

But she’s meant to be evil. And Eric isn’t evil. Of course, she’s not supposed to be nice enough to actually grant mermaids the use of legs on an annual basis. So what exactly is their version of Ursula gonna be like? Maybe all of this is taking place when she wasn’t evil? I’m not really familiar with the stage version, but…

In this version, Ursula is King Triton’s sister. As revealed in the lyrics of Ursula’s song “I Want the Good Times Back”, when their father died, the pair were given equal share of the sea plus two magical items. Triton received the trident while Ursula received the magic Nautilus shell. Though the two were to rule the seas together, Ursula’s greed and use of dark magic to usurp Triton led to her being banished. Her need for revenge is her motivation for the show.

I LOVE THE STAGE VERISON. But people have worshipped evil dieties before. They may not see her as such. For all we know she makes their fishing successsful and creates smooth sailing. In the Broadway version, Ursula used her power to create a high wave to keep Eric from Ariel. She is probably very powerful in this version too.

But what if that’s the Eric twist? that he owes allegiance to Ursula as goddess? In Disney retelling, Ursula is evil because they need a villain to go up against, but in the original telling the sea witch who grants Ariel legs isnt’ really evil or good. She’s just more or less the trope of an old hag you go see who can grant your wish but warns you of a great cost.
