I didn’t really understand the backlash with the apple, but I do agree it would have been cool to use one of Emma’s symbols in the same place. You get a little with the feathers with the eyes, but its subtle.
The main reason for the backlash isn’t just the apple itself, but the fact that they’re recycling the exact same poster design as the Season 3 and Season 4 poster. All they did was replace one character with another, while making the apple look different. It comes off as lazy.

I’m willing to bet that if we ever get to a Hercules Centric Arc…we’re gonna get a Golden Apple. Kinda like with Arrow, there logo is a literal arrow, and Grey’s Anatomy has the red life line logo under the Grey’s….the apple is just OUAT’s logo.
Black feathers would have been a nice touch and a perfect homage to the Black Swan, but the Black Apple really represents how dark and rotten Emma has become as the Dark One…it’s symbolic. And it’s also a nice throwback to this scene where Emma crushes a black rotten apple, and says Rotten to the core. Now that I think about it…it could have been foreshadowing since Season 1 Adam and Eddy’s direction with their main character Emma.

The rotten apple in S1 is working on a whole different level from the one in S5 poster. In S1 it is a rotten and it’s representative of Regina and her waning power as Mayor as the time of the Savior approaches. In S5 it’s not rotten, it’s just dark and has nothing to do with waning power but of a new power.
BUT with that said, Emma’s journey really doesn’t need to be foreshadowed or carefully planned since S1 for A and E to have had Dark Swan on their radar for some point in time. Heroes Journey…yadda yadda yadda…monomyth road…yadda yadda yadda. Y’all have heard me talk about this countless times now.

It was iconic in S1. It’s traditionally an iconic part of the Snow White story, and they showed us the role the apple played in that, then they expanded it to SB with the apple turnover and Henry in the sleeping curse, which got broken.
The apple wasn’t at all a significant thing in S3, but EQ and the apple was the cover of the freaking DVD, WHY. They crammed it into a promo image with Elsa, freaking ELSA, what does she have to do with the freaking apple? And now they’ve crammed it into a promo image with Emma where it’s really not needed.
The apple was a thing for a few scenes way back in season one and it hasn’t been relevant since so can they please get over their attachment to the freaking apple when it’s no longer a focal point of the show and therefore has nothing to do with how they should be promoting current storylines?!?!?
Ahem…sorry (not sorry) for the rant…I’m just…REALLY SUPER DONE with that stupid apple.
