This Sunday at 8/7, ABC’s Once Upon a Time is heading 20,000 leag—, er, many fathoms under the sea, as Hook crosses paths with another famous seafarer — while in present-day Storybrooke, the pirate grapples with his decision to deceive Emma, by holding onto the magical shears with which she might ultimately excise her Savior status.

“He loves Emma and is obviously very concerned for her. That’s his whole reason for keeping them,” Colin O’Donoghue explains to TVLine. “He sees this as a way that he can protect her and save her from dying,” should she choose to abandon her role as a seemingly damned Savior.

“Hook knows that deep down, he’s sort of betraying her,” the actor continues, “but he’s doing it in his mind for all the right reasons — much in the same way that she kept him alive when he said he wanted to die, in Camelot, rather than become the Dark One.”

Then why does he lie all the time?

LOL right?? Like…just stop lying. Him and Emma, both.

I know I know. PLOT and my questions are pointless.

Though at this point, who hasn’t lied among our main characters? Aside from Emma and Hook:

    – Rumple? Check. It’s quite regularly with him.
    – Snow? Check. The example that comes off the top of my head was when she and Charming lied to Emma to hide what they did to Lily.
    – Charming? Check. Even aside from the Lily incident, he lied to hide that he was poisoned with dreamshade, and he technically lied when he said he would burn the paper and not go after who killed his father. Of course there was also all the lying he did as David Nolan, but the show’s excuse for that was that he was cursed.
    – Regina? Check. Too many to list.
    – Belle? Check. Yes, they’ve even had Belle lie before. She lied about not knowing who Anna was.
    – Henry? Pretty sure he’s had his share of lies.

In short, the writers will have any of their characters lie in order to build drama. In particular, they overuse this trope: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LiarRevealed, among many others.

Oh sure. I get it from an outside universe perspective. Inside wise, however, it’s a bit eye roll worthy. It’s that whole Doyle vs Watsonian debate people were having in another thread.
