Frankenstein-Whale post curse seemed like a drunken mess of wasted plot potential tossed aside for a few jokes more than an attempt to fashion a whole character. The whole science versus magic thing ending in a crushed neck of missed opportunities. Was Whale-F capable of growing and changing? We’ll never know entirely but we saw a moment of friendship of sorts start to form between him and Red, “monster to monster”.
I suspect that their original plan for S2 would have involved some more development of Victor, which would have fed into the Frankenwolf thing as Red’s big story arc. Part of what makes me think that is the way they staged some stuff in We Are Both…
It works on the “if he hurts her he’ll meet Granny’s crossbow and he knows it” level, and also on the “cupid’s arrow” level. And after Granny had walked past him, he started to walk in Red’s direction, doing the nervous neck rub like he wanted to actually approach her and say something…
Then at the town line, during Charming’s speech, immediately after, “Stay here and every choice is open to you,” there’s this shot…
Then we got red being the only colour he’d seen in his world. And Frankenstein and the Wolf(wo)man is a classic combo that I’m sure they’d love to play on and twist to their own design.Anyway, it seems IMO that they were laying some groundwork for it even in the 2nd ep of S2, (and even in S1, because yes he was sleazy with his leering, but now we know about his connection to the colour red, which makes me see S1 Whale as slightly less sleazy with the butt staring, he probably had some subconscious thing about being fascinated by the colour red buried in his brain somewhere), and the writers have their pic stuck on the wall, so I’ve gotta believe that it (Victor’s individual character growth, in addition to the relationship) would have been explored and developed properly had they not changed course mid-season. Would there be enough time to develop it properly at the back end of S3? Who knows, but I won’t be surprised if they give it a shot.
I do wish they’d used Victor in the magic vs science storyline, that seems like a massively wasted opportunity, but maybe they’ll be able to rectify that a bit if they use him in the Wizard of Oz storyline instead, (the Wizard’s illusions were a sort of science masquerading as magic).
I can see Ruby having a heavy presence again in Season 4 like she had in Season 1 as I don’t think Intelligence will be renewed. Episode 1 clocked in at a 2.4 whilst episode 2 dropped down to a 1.2.
I wonder if Ginny and Josh’s work load might decrease a bit towards the end of S3 and even into S4? They’re gonna have a newborn, and the actors already seem to be battered around with 4am call times and then shooting until after dark, so how do you balance those kind of work hours with looking after a new baby? Anyway, if those two have their screentime cut back a bit, that could maybe make some room for Meghan to become a regular again, if Intelligence does get the chop.

I agree. I think the original S2 plan was to have a developed love story for Red and Whale and to integrate Red into the family a bit more. But once they go the rights to NL and PP, things took a u-turn.

Ginny is due in April so it could be that Snow’s presence in 320-322 is a less because of that fact. Seems like the perfect time to bring in Red to help out! However, I sorta doubt they’ll re-make her a regular. They didn’t really know what to do with her when they had her as a regular. She had one centric, Child of the Moon, but it wasn’t really a successful story. And what more is there to tell in the past with Red? She might be better off as a guest star. Once you make someone a regular there are certain contractual obligations about hours worked/episodes you must appear in. And if they are looking to add one more person to the lineup, if anyone, it’ll be Sean for the purposes of OutlawQueen.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"January 16, 2014 at 8:38 am #237433betsypaige24ParticipantI don’t think being made a regular again would be a good idea as Ruby would just be stuck in storyline limbo again. It’s not like Whale would be a regular, so even a romance with him would be barely shown……….. More to the point, we’re still waiting for Belle to get a storyline or even more than 10 minutes of screen time per season – and we’re very likely going to have a long, long wait for that (she’s attached to Gold and they don’t even get a lot of screen time -and we’re talking an insanely popular ship).
It’s ironic that Meghan and Emilie were made regulars at around the same time and that both should be in the same position (I say this because Belle should not be a regular character at this point – and it kills me to say this, but it would be better for her to be recurring, like Ruby may become)
January 16, 2014 at 8:49 am #237435PheeParticipantI can’t imagine Emilie getting demoted to recurring status, no matter what amount of screentime she does or doesn’t get. They’d want her exclusively for their show, wouldn’t want her going off to star in anything else, and keeping her on contract as a regular, giving her the pay rate of a regular, is the way to do that. She’s not just some random actress, she was part of LOST, so she’s probably sorta like family to Adam and Eddy in a sense. They didn’t have that sort of previous relationship with Meghan, which may have contributed to how she ended up getting demoted.
Good point about Sean probably getting regular status if they do bump someone else up to that level.

I don’t think it’s right for Adam and Eddy to keep Emilie around just in case they need her; in fact, I think it’s wrong. It’s pretty clear that Belle is nothing more than a walking storyline for Gold and while I have zero problems with her being a huge part of his arc, I have many problems with her rarely being seen. If they don’t need Belle except on rare occasions, then Belle should not be a regular. I’d hate to see Emilie lose her steady job, but she’s an actor – she has to want to work. She deserves to be freed up to look for actual work. If that means that she’s unavailable when they need her, so be it – the show would have to make do. It’s not like they think she’s that important – if they thought that, they’d make far better use of her.
As to family, it’s lovely that Adam and Eddy adore Emilie personally, but that doesn’t mean mucdh as seen by her utter lack of air time. They asked her initially if she wanted to play Belle because they thought she’d be perfect for the role. IMO, they should only keep her as a regular if they value what she brings to the character – no other reason.

Belle looks to be getting more screen time in season 3B. Now that Neal and Rumple have made up, Belle is going to be important to Neal because she is his dad’s true love and helped bring out the best in Rumple.

I agree. Aside from the obvious which can’t last forever, Hook hasn’t got any other long running storylines to be involved in. Neverland was Hook’s time to shine and he kind of didn’t, where was the famous Hook/Pan rivalry? Hook’s current role so far seems to be to serve as one third of the triangle but once that’s over, what’s Hook going to do then?
Less screentime for Hook could mean that he gets to do more great stuff on screen when he is on rather than just having storylines that plod along just because they need to give the character screentime to fulfil contractual obligations.

I hope so, but I tend to doubt it……I’ve been burned by Adam and Eddy too much, lol.
January 17, 2014 at 12:22 am #237663CindersParticipantIn my head I picture Ruby rummaging through her closet.
Granny- “what are you doing in there?”
Ruby- “My slippers! I can’t find my Ruby slippers!” -
