I think it is more likely that they are asking for a specifically African-American actress because the character they have in mind is typically African-American. And like KFC and myself pointed out, that could be Tiana or it could be Dorothy. (or it could be anyone)

Because Dorothy is Tamara’s Grandma. It’s my crack theory and I’m sticking with it! 😛
I read something somewhere (probably tumblr) recently that said that unless a casting call actually specifies that a character is non-white, it’s an automatic assumption that the character will be white, and so anyone of a different race typically won’t even be sent to audition. Sad state of affairs if that’s really the case, but it would suggest that there’s a specific reason they want to cast this role as African-American if they made sure the casting call said it.
November 23, 2013 at 12:54 am #225972TheGoldenKeyParticipantI was chatting with Gypsy and Kellyn1604 this evening. We think it could be Pollyanna (played by a young Hayley Mills). It is a Disney movie. She was a young orphan who suffered many challenges but still looked at the brighter side of things until her car accident. She lost the use of her legs. She eventually overcame her fear and sadness, was an inspiration to everyone and eventually learned to walk again. They do say “crippling fear” in the casting call. Hayley Mills was a wee “lass” and the British darling of the world throughout the 60’s.
A close contender would Mary McDhui from The Three Lives of Thomasina, another Disney movie. This was about a young Scottish (lass) named Mary (played by the same little girl who starred in Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) whose cat, Thomasina had died. Because her father (a vet) failed to save her cat, she withdraws from the world until Thomasina eventually returns, having been nursed back to life by a good witch named Lori. So we have an element of magic with this story.

It definitely wasn’t meant toward you, personally. I was responding generally regarding some of the themes you mentioned. Honestly, depending on the story and how it is told, I don’t think it really matters if a character is the same race they are “normally portrayed as.” In some instances, this might be inappropriate. With this type of show, though, there is always room for interpretation. I mean, on ONCE Little Red Riding Hood is the WOLF! Still can’t get over that one! I do, however, thank you for taking the time to clarify your post.

Although not really a fairytale, Pollyanna would be fun to see!

Yes, but this show isn’t just about Fairy Tale characters, we know it can be about any storybook character, mythology, folklore, classic tales, gothic tales, etc. That’s why we’ve seen Dr. Frankenstein, Midas, Siren, Robin Hood, Sir Lancelot, etc.
