This Sunday on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, a months-old TVLine scoop came to pass, leaving our Storybrooke heroes shell-shocked.
As we in flashback saw how Neal and Belle worked to resurrect Rumplestiltskin, with “thanks” to Lumiere, in current day Storybrooke Emma not only tracked down Gold, she also reunited with baby daddy Neal — though it was then that we learned the ultimate price of The Dark One’s revival.
For, though undisclosed by Lumiere (who was doing the Wicked Witch’s bidding), bringing back The Dark One is a one-for-one trade, meaning that Neal essentially gave his life for his father’s, as their selves merged in the Fairy Tale Land flashback. And just as Emma brought her onetime love up to speed on the twisted Storybrooke sitch (and her year in New York City, where she was almost betrothed to a flying monkey), she realized that Neal and Rumple were sharing a form. And knowing that only his father could identity the Wicked Witch and help Storybrooke snap this new curse, Neal asked Emma to use her magic and pull Rumple out of him.
Emma did so, separating the two men. OnceUponaTime_Neal-DeadBut Neal’s fate was nevertheless sealed, and with his dying breaths he asked Emma to make sure Henry knew his father, in the end, was a good man. And Emma did just that, later sharing with their son a version of the truth, saying that his father died a hero — and that the culprit in his death would pay.
As series cocreators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz told TVLine back in January, a major character would be dying during Season 3B — “for real,” it was made clear — at which point his/her portrayer, meaning series regular Michael Raymond James, would leave the show. So, 49 percent of TVLine readers guessed right.
The last paragraph is basically confirmation that Neal was the death that TV Line reported about back in January.
