Cora told Rumple as he lay dying that he was the only man she ever truly loved, so much that he was her weakness, which made her rip out her own heart. So, if Cora really loved Rumple, he must not have loved her in return, because their kiss had no effect on his curse as the dark one. Right?

March 11, 2013 at 1:05 am #178808RumplesGirlKeymasterI think she lusted after him, after his power. I think Cora has a very time knowing what love really is. Only in her last moments did she realize what it was. I don’t think she really loved Rumple, but I think Rumple deeply cared for her.
OR. I’m dead wrong and I’m too troubled over this fantastic episode.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 11, 2013 at 1:13 am #178811RumplesGirlKeymasterI’ve got form some thoughts on this so I’m going to just talk:
–I think Cora loved power more. That’s why she chose to take her own heart. And I think she was playing Rumple. She brought up love, not him. She then used that to get him to change the deal. And she only admitted she loved him when she was heartless, and therefore unable to know what love was. Once she had her heart back, then she knew that she really loved Regina, but I don’t know about Rumple.
–Rumple was in lust with her. She was dark and scary and perfect for his tortured soul. But not love. Not love."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 11, 2013 at 1:15 am #178813drtslimParticipantI think that Cora really did care about Rumple and meant it when she said that she loved Rumple). Prince Henry was clearly enamored with her and had power and admiration. Rumplestiltskin was a pariah, hated and feared by everyone. Her heart was clearly with Rumple, but she also desired (and ultimately chose) to have the admiration and respect that being with Henry would give her. However, while I think that Cora really did care for Rumple, true love sacrifices for their beloved and she couldn’t or wouldn’t do that.
March 11, 2013 at 1:19 am #178818RumplesGirlKeymasterBut your point “as much as someone like Cora could love” does that mean that its not really love if it’s only the way Cora can love. She may have thought she was in love with Rumple, but I think it was his power she was in love with.

My edited statement answers this question.
March 11, 2013 at 1:23 am #178820RumplesGirlKeymasterBut it wasn’t true love. Because if it had been, his curse would have broken. His true love is Belle, that’s why she can break his curse.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 11, 2013 at 1:29 am #178822KebParticipantBelle was willing to sacrifice her chance at freedom for the hope of helping Rumple. Cora wasn’t willing to sacrifice marrying a guy she didn’t love and the power that came with it even to be with Rumple. I think that’s the key difference.

I agree. But, I believe that Cora did have real feelings for Rumplestiltskin beyond being drawn to his power. He’d already taught her how to use magic and she was set to marry the prince. The fact that she felt that she needed to rip out her own heart says to me that part of her really wanted to be with Rumplestiltskin. The fact that she chose her life with the prince over being with Rumplestiltskin does say that whatever feelings she did have, weren’t true love.

Forever re-quoting this!!! Cora wanted power. POWER. Not love.

To me, the fact that she ripped out her own heart means that she didn’t really love him because she was willing to give him up. Belle was coming back to Rumple. She was going to fight for their love. In the end, whatever Cora felt for Rumple was totally eclipsed by her love of power. I think she was in lust with his power, what he could give her, darkness and the ability to make them all bend.
