If she were just playing him, or he was playing her, I don’t think it would be as tragic. I don’t think either had simple emotions, or you might say “pure” emotions. Rumpel changed the deal, but there was still a deal. Cora changed her mind, but had to rip out her own heart to go through with it. They both still had reservations and doubts. That is why it was not “true” enough of a love to change Rumpel’s form.

The woman is delusional. She is the type that believes in her own lies as she is telling them and that’s why everybody believes them. That’s why Snow trusted her with Regina’s secret, and Daniel thought she wanted what was best for her daughter right before his heart was ripped out. Because she really means it, right before she goes psycho. In that line of thought she probably was convinced she loved Rumpel. It’s just not what you and I would call love, and it was more about power than love for her. He promised her the moon, so to speak, power beyond what she could hope for. Rumpel handed her dreams on a golden platter and for that she loved him. That’s not love
And Rumpel loved her, because he felt like he finally had someone that understood him, or so he thought. For Cora love was equal to taking, not giving. If you look at it, it’s not that different from Milah, that loved Rumpel for the security he brought, but then ran off with the first flashy pirate that came along. Both were with him for what he could give them, not for who he was.
The Corrumpel relationship was as toxic as hell…. but well, they were both bad, so neither one even considered this. It didn’t cross their mind
And then there is Belle, who never asked anything from Rumpel (except to be the man she knows he can be), and who loves the man that he is. She gave herself to him (from the start even) and never took anything. Remember Rumple told Regina he met her before as a baby. And he witnessed Cora become the monster she turned out to be based on his comments on her in 2×08 and 2×09.

March 11, 2013 at 1:07 pm #178950RumplesGirlKeymasterSo I went to bed and we still haven’t settled this questions. lol 🙂
I thought a lot about this last night and I have a few more points.
–I don’t think Cora knew what love really was until the moment Regina put her heart back into her body. She only thought she knew what love was, and to her it was weakness. In those last few moments, she suddenly realized that love is what she felt when she was staring at her child and suddenly knew that it was more than enough, that the power didn’t matter. But she didn’t know love until that moment.
–Did Rumple love Cora? I still don’t know the answer to this question. Jane Espenson’s tweets make me *head desk*. When I went back and re-watched, I was disturbed that Rumple needed to know if Cora ever truly loved him. Why does he need to know? He clearly found a love that was more powerful and real and y’know..actual love with Belle. and like Jane said, he clearly doesn’t love her anymore. Rumple knew love before Belle with Milah, I accept that. And I think with Milah it was a young, hopeless dreamer type love. With Cora it was feeding into each other’s darkest desires and tapping into power. He mistook it for love because of how alone he was and because he finally found someone who shared that desire for darkness. I don’t know if we can call that love in a show that sets up love as the most powerful magic of all. The most powerful good magic of all.
–I keep going back to this but love was never mentioned until Cora needed something. And then, Cora being uber smart, probably realizes how Rumple felt and played off that. She plays people; I strongly suspect her dressing up in that red gown and “pretending” that she didn’t realize she was talking to the Prince was all a ruse to get him to notice her so she could raise in her station."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 11, 2013 at 1:41 pm #178961spinninggoldParticipant“He clearly doesn’t still love Cora”… True, moment she said it was over we saw a glance of vindictive Rumpel that ripped out is wife’s heart… only that was not an option.
BTW that was the second time he asked someone if they really loved him, just before they died (basically at his hand, because he put Snow up to it). I wonder because she said yes if that is gonna gnaw away at his conscience… Because he just admitted he was full of love, not hate…It’s the Dark One that consist of hate.
And what I think the writers tried to do was make a paralel between Cora And MilahMarch 11, 2013 at 2:01 pm #178968midnight drearyParticipantGod, I love Jane. 😀 She addressed every single one of my concerns.

After rewatching the episode, I believe Rumple loved Cora in his own way. Rumple said to Cora he loved her in the scene where he amended the contract for her to give him a child of his own. He may have started out just using Cora so Regina could cast his dark curse, but when he realized Cora could possibly return his love, he changed their deal so that Cora would owe him his child. Think about what that means. Rumple was willing to forego the very existence of Regina, whom he had foreseen would cast the dark curse. That means Rumple was in effect willing to let go of ever finding Baelfire again for the chance of having a child of his own with the woman he loved. In the next scene they were in together, Rumple was anxiously awaiting Cora’s arrival so they could run off and start a family together. So, while Rumple may have started out just wanting to use Cora to get to Regina, he did fall for Cora’s sauciness and for her apparent willingness to give him the one thing he wanted more than anything: a child of his own to help mitigate the loss of Baelfire. When Cora came to his deathbed, he no longer loved Cora, but he wanted to know if Cora had ever returned his love, because he wanted to know what might have been. Also, according to Jane Espenson, Belle was Rumple’s true love, but not his first, so by implicaiton, Rumple must’ve loved Cora. It may not have been a pure love, but it was still a form of love, as the centuries of isolation had dark Rumple had become quite lonely and desperate for any form of affection.

March 11, 2013 at 2:41 pm #178983PheeParticipantIt’s funny how I’d always figured their relationship would have been one sided in the opposite direction, with Cora being the helpless romantic who wished they could run off together. Maybe that’s why their scenes weirded me out, because I wasn’t prepared to see Rumple being the more emotionally needy one.
March 11, 2013 at 2:47 pm #178986RumplesGirlKeymasterWould Rumple really have given up the search for Bae? I found that scene so odd and I’ve watched it so many times now. I can’t believe Rumple would give that up. He spent a life time search for Bae, and to give up for a woman that only brings out the darkness in him… I think it’s a total reversal of his character that he would suddenly give up Bae.
