I think that Rumple did know that by starting a family with Cora he would be changing the future. Perhaps preventing himself from ever finding Bae some other way than the way he cancelled out. But I don’t think he was giving up. He would’ve kept trying to find another way. And frankly, there WERE other ways to get from fairy tale land to our world. 1) Bae didn’t go straight to our world with the bean, so he found another way. 2) there were other beans in giant land 3) there was at least one enchanted tree that he could’ve learned how to use.
Good point. We’ve learned of numerous different ways to get to from one world to another. Rumpel has tried the magic bean, Jefferson’s hat, Dorothy’s ruby slippers (The Doctor) and then he settled on the curse. So, Rumpel wanting to start a family with Cora didn’t mean that he was giving up on his search for Baelfire. There were many different ways for him to reach him.
As far as Rumple knew, Hook stole his last chance to use a magical bean when Hook tricked him, Jefferson’s hat only worked as a portal to lands with magic, and the ruby slippers had already disappeared from Oz. Rumple searched high and low for alternatives to the dark curse, but he always came up empty handed. In his mind at that moment when Cora agreed to have his child, Rumple probably really did give up on the dark curse and so on what he saw as his last chance to find Bae. Notice, I’m not claiming he would have given up his search entirely forever more. For example, Rumple might have eventually realized Tiny the giant had a defunct magical bean which could be rejuvenated in the waters of Lake Nostos, or he might have realized there was an enchanted tree left that could be fashioned into a portal. Yet, in that moment, Rumple might not have glimpsed those options, because he was so undone by the chance of having a child of his own. He might have been so caught off guard by this new possibility that he failed to glimpse alternatives for finding Bae.

I agree. Plus, I think he always had back up plans even if he could see the future like how he tested Ella and Thomas to see how strong their true love was. If Snowing hadn’t worked out, then he could have used baby Alexandra as a back up. I’m sure he had several contingency plans in place in case Regina didn’t turn out to be the one that would enact the curse and Emma didn’t turn out to be the Savior.

Think about what that means. Rumple was willing to forego the very existence of Regina, whom he had foreseen would cast the dark curse. That means Rumple was in effect willing to let go of ever finding Baelfire again for the chance of having a child of his own with the woman he loved.
Ehm no, don’t think so. We have seen that the future is not fixed but certain events are bound to happen. Like Rumpel losing his son. That was a given, even though the how and why were blurry. I think that he was banking on the idea that even with him as father, the envisioned girl still would have been born, and they could raise her together, as a happy family. That would be a dream of Rumpel, because he would get a do-over… and get his son back. Just like he promises Cora mountains of gold and power beyond her imagination, in that second she does the same for him. Give himeverything he has ever dreamed of. Only she doesn’t fullfill that promise.
Part of me does not get it, as Rumpel’s wife she could have been more powerful than anyone. Cross Rumpel’s wife and you are sure to end up as chopped snail liver.
On the other hand, she was sick of her stigma of miller’s daughter and as mrs Rumpel she would have gotten another stigma entirely. But still… way more power… and a sexy beast to boot rrrrawwMarch 11, 2013 at 3:47 pm #179019midnight drearyParticipantMaybe we should just ask Jane. 😆

Yup probably 😆 Getting a list of questions here.

This honestly seems like the best solution. 🙂

Wouldn’t be Once if we didn’t have a lot of different opinions. 🙂 What makes it fun, right? And I’m sure if Jane ever responds to our questions, those on the opposite side of Jane will still disagree.

By staying with Henry and choosing power, she could have power over her husband AND probably over the King because she’s one who can spin gold and remove hearts. I bet he gave her a wide berth after seeing her power. Give her what she wants because she’s keeping your kingdom in gold. With Rumple she would always be second best.

Maybe his vision was only that her firstborn daughter would be the one he needed, and the father was a mystery to him. It might as well could have been his child.
And for Rumple, the idea of having a family is incredibly seductive, I think. It’s all he ever wanted pre-dark one, it’s what he wanted when Milah wanted to run off, and I suspect it’s what he hopes for with Belle and Bae now.
