What is the benefit to doing this with javascript rather than with plain html? It seems unnecessarily complicated, compared to putting an img with an alt in a link.

It’s an SEO benefit. Search engines will see the linked text and JavaScript goes back and replaces the text with an image for humans.
This also gives me potential to change things more easily in the future and measure impressions.
