I think this scene is evidence for Doctor Whale being the whale from “Pinocchio”. The storm was about to capsize the tiny raft and send the two passengers into the cold, rough water. A huge whale appeared, opened its mouth to swallow its prey, and in the next moment Gepetto was safe on the beach. That whale came to save their lives, and regardless of how Doctor Whale conducts his personal life, saving lives is what he does professionally. The scene fits with the Biblical story of Jonah, and I can’t help but think that it’s also a reference to the Doctor Who episode “The Beast Below”.

That is a really interesting theory. It would also explain why the scene between the whale attacking and Geppetto&Pin on the shore is missing. Dr. Whale's story is supposedly coming in season 2.

I’m still not convinced he’s a whale. They’ll really have to pull something out of their bag for that to work for me. I think he’s Prince Eric from Little Mermaid. Although I loved that movie, it was really the songs, Ariel, and the sea witch that made it great. Prince Eric was not my favorite. I always thought he was too fickle, falling in love with a girl for her voice. It seemed a stupid reason in my tween mind at the time. Still think that way. On the other hand, I always loved Beauty and the Beast, even long before the Disney version. Anyway, Dr. Whale seems to have a wondering eye and that reminds me of Eric.

Okay, I rewatched Pinocchio yesterday and realized that that specific scene is the last of the movie. It’s been years since I actually watched it. I was impressed by how spot on the raft and the whale appears in the show. The whale attacks the raft, then they wash up on shore, Pinocchio is unconscious, Gepetto finds him, and then the Blue Fairy turns him into a real boy. The end. I think they chose that to hasten the story along the point we needed it. No need to tell the whole tale. We just need the ending. I don’t think it had anything to do with showing Monstro to tie to Dr. Whale. And the whale was in Henry’s story. That’s the scene where the story stopped. Even August said that it stopped there because they’re writing the story now, and really, nobody knew the real ending of sending him in the wardrobe.

Aww, you’re too harsh on Eric! 🙁 He couldn’t help his wandering eye! Ursula bewitched him! And he didn’t just fall in love with Ariel for her voice or her looks. Who could resist a beautiful, mysterious person of the opposite sex who saved their life and then disappeared before they could thank them?? I couldn’t!! And the way it happened was almost like a dream (the old guy thought he’d drunk too much seawater when he heard the story) so I’m not surprised he would keep thinking about that girl and crush on her! Frankly, ARIEL’s the superficial one who fell in love with him because of his looks and his species!!! I always thought she was crazy. Especially because of the thing with the statute…

Okay, all of that is to say that I really hope Dr. Whale is not Eric! Booo. But I’m probably biased in liking Eric and not liking Dr. Whale. xD
