DQ: What you want is out there. Everything I want is in here. Do what you want with the rest of the world.
That doesn’t say he wants world domination–just that what he wants is beyond Storybrooke. And if what he wants is to either have maximum power or to get Bae back, that makes sense.
Ok. I prefer the idea that what Rumple wants is simply “out there” in the world rather than world domination. That, I could believe. However, what could exist in A Land Without Magic that would be of value to Rumple? Does Rumple need some artifact that belonged to his son so he can cast some spell? Maybe it’s something that belonged to his son, something that is still in that apartment in Manhattan, such as the dreamcatcher. Rumple told Ingrid that certain items hold so much sentimental value that they become imbued with “their own special kind of magic.” The ribbons are one such example of items holding great magic because they represented sisterly true love. Something belonging to Rumple’s son could have such special significance to Rumple.
Ingrid also said that Rumple wants what all villains want: everything. Going back to season one, what Rumple wanted was to keep his magic and his son. Yet, in choosing to keep his magic, he lost his son. Now he ‘s lost his son for good. Yes, he has his magic and he has Belle, but it’s still not enough. The only way Rumple could get everything he wants is to cleave himself from the dagger, to keep his magic, to keep Belle, and to get his son back. Without his son, Rumple could never have everything he wants.

Well that flies right in the face of what Rumple said in 401 about how he’s moving on, how he has Belle now, how he’ll be a better a man for Neal, ect ect ect.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 10, 2014 at 11:04 am #289640KebParticipantYeah, I know, BUT he said that before he found the hat.
Finding the hat changed his mind about letting Belle have the dagger. It’s a Big Big deal to him. I think it’s about more than just being free of the dagger (which, yes, is big). I think it could lead him back to Baelfire somehow.
Rumple’s been defeated quite a few times, but one of the things that IS loveable about him is that he almost always finds another way (and of course gets his revenge in the process…).

Everything Rumple has done since he discovered that sorcerer’s hat has flown in the face of the promise he made at Neal’s grave. That’s sort of the point I think. Robert Carlyle even said as much in a recent interview about Rumple’s recent behavior.

November 10, 2014 at 11:11 am #289643RumplesGirlKeymasterI very sincerely doubt it has anything to do with getting Neal back. It might be Rumple trying to hold on to power so that he doesn’t lose anything/anyone ever again, but it will have zero to do with trying to bring Neal back from the dead.

Then we’re back to square one. What would Rumple possibly want that is beyond SB? I still have a hard time believing his goal is simply to control the world through magic. Rumple has never wanted that before. It also goes against what Ingrid said about Rumple wanting everything. Has Rumple ever wanted world domination? No. Has Rumple ever wanted to find his son? Yes.

You think this show cares about consistency?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"November 10, 2014 at 11:20 am #289646Heart of DarknessParticipantCurrent theory: you need the heart of the thing you HATE most. This is to break the hold of the Dark One’s Curse, then it’s going to require something really big and vile.
The heart of the thing you hate most was actually a necessary ingredient in a curse Regina was going to cast in “Welcome to Storybrooke”: the curse of the empty-hearted, which can supposedly make a person think they love you.
So it’s definitely something that could be used in dark curses.

In short, I agree. I’m still playing with ideas. While I think total world domination is too one-dimensional for a complex character like Rumple, the writers could totally butcher Rumple’s character motivation, which I wouldn’t put past them.
