Daniel the stable boy / lover
I do not think Regina really loved Daniel, he was a first crush/ infatuation / puppy love. If they had made it to run away with each other, she would have gotten bored with their life together and with him in short order.
Daniel was naive, even though he lived in the household/ homestead and knew Cora was magical, he kept saying…. ” What could she do to us? How can she stop us?” Regina was aware of what her mother was like and what she was capable of . I think she took up with Daniel because she wanted to get away from her mother, she may have seen him as her white knight that was going to save her from her life with her mother. I do not think that Regina is capable of REAL LOVE, the kind of love you have for someone through the darkest hours, to trials and tribulations. I do not think she could withstand any hardships they would have encountered over the long run that would have resulted from them running away together.
Henry: father … doted on his daughter and Regina also loved him . Seemed to be well off but not of royal blood. He was subservient passive and probably afraid of his wife’s magic. He allowed Cora to abuse Regina and gave just token resistance or objection to the abuse, I considered him and enable . I also think he continue his subservient demeanor when Regina got power that is why he worked as a servant (valet / butler) she controlled.
Cora: mother
Classic mental abuse of Regina if viewed from today’s psychological profile. Did not just use the usual techniques an abusive mother would use on a child, she also used magic to bully Regina. Cora is more than just and abusive evil mother she is a power hungry witch.Mother demanding, manipulative, vindictive, and belittling, . Cora had probably been unable to achiever her own upward mobile goals of marrying royalty. She had married Henry snow father, maybe a rich merchant but not of nobility. Now Cora saw the chance to have her daughter marry royalty. This is her ticket out….. You will note that at the end scene she was planning to move in with Regina and the king. I wonder how long that lasted, was Cora like the guest that stayed to long at the party?
Regina probably inherited her ability to use magic from her mother initially, put she had to hone her abilities and learn how to use it to the fullest. I have heard theories that she learned magic from her mother. I do not think Cora would show her daughter how to do so, IF she taught her daughter she would eventually loose power / control over Regina. I think Regina instead learned about magic and how to control it on the sly. She probably LEARNED or improved upon magic she inherited by making deals with RUMPLESTILSKIN. I think this occurred after her marriage to King Leopold. We know from SKIN DEEP that Rumple lived near by as it was just a carriage ride to his home. We also know Regina was comfortable showing up at Rumple’s home to bargain with him. I think Regina had the cunning and ability to manipulate, she learned that from her mother. I however think she needed strong mentor like Rumple to help her improve her skill till she was more powerful then her mother.
Rumple may have helped Regina to rid himself from the association of Cora who may have gotten strong enough to give him problems. He might have been hoping they would destroy each other.
This is my take upon the current status of ONCE UPON A TIME after seeing STABLE BOY. I think I have a better understanding of Regina’s character. This not to say I think her actions or attitude is excusable or forgivable.

LOOKING forward to hearing your opinions …

Now that we have confirmation of Cora as the miller’s daughter, my most recent theory is that Cora may have missed out on marrying her true love because her father (aka The Miller) was trying to social climb and impress the local king that his daughter could spin straw into gold.
At that point Cora does not yet have magic yet. The King that is greedy for a wife that can spin straw into gold may have been Midas before he got his golden touch.
So since Cora cannot actually spin straw into gold, Rumplestiltskin comes to offer the many deals that Cora referred to in Stable Boy. Cora is rewarded by becoming Queen. By this point, Cora has gained her father’s passion for social status and power.
I think Kathryn/Abigail is the baby that Cora traded away as her first born. Once Rumplestiltskin came back to collect on the deal, King Midas was so upset he divorced and banished Cora from his Kingdom. Cora ended up marrying Henry who as Nonnie states is likely wealthy but not royalty or nobility. And although Cora may not truly loves Henry, she probably likes the facet that she can manipulate him.
After having Rumple set the example, Cora also comes to the realization that magic will provide greater power in FTL. She may have learned some magic from Rumple, and some from other sources.
Meanwhile, King Midas makes another deal with Rumplestiltskin in order to keep his daughter. Not sure yet what he trades. Eventually of course, King Midas gets his “golden arm”.
Abigail may have known her mother had been banished and heard rumors of how Cora had killed Regina’s love in order for Regina to become a Queen. After all, Abigail does state she ears everywhere. Therefore the reason for why Abigail comments to James after he has helped her rescue Frederick that “some people will do anything” to keep others from their happy endings.

Frederick could have been the sacrifice to be made to get Abigail back thus “the nag with the bad” attitude.
