ParticipantI think it’s pretty clear what Rumple wants. It was revealed that what he wants is to remove the control the dagger has over him while keeping his magic. He’s still choosing power over everything else, despite all the character growth he made in sacrificing himself to save his son and Belle.

Wanting to keep his magic isn’t necessarily ‘choosing power over everything else’.

It largely depends on why he wants to keep his magic. If it’s for something good, then I maybe it’s an okay justification (though it’s a big maybe). If it’s simply refusing to give up his power, then that’s not character growth at all, especially after holding his dying son in his arms and throwing his dagger to Zelena.

Not really, we learned that Rumple in the past wanted the hat in order to free himself from the dagger and keep his power. Current Rumple may still want this, but now he know what its like to be someone’s slave. It could be that this inspires him to try to give up the dagger in order to prevent himself from being in that position. Its just the situation has changed, and he may not want to have anyone control him or force him to hurt the people he loves. I am not saying it right what he is doing is right, but the character did evolve…. I know he performing the same action, but his motivations could be different.

But this is s big problem because no one can figure out his motivations. They aren’t in any way shape or form clear. He promises to behave to Neal’s grave, then because he sees a shiny on his honeymoon, he reverts. Then it’s back and forth, lying, back and forth, more lies–all promises to Nealfire totally gone. No one can piece together what he’s doing

ParticipantI’m hoping that like Season One, there is more the story than meets the eye. I really like the idea that he wants power so no one can control him like Zelena did. I also wonder if he someone wants to use the power to change the past or right wrongs. I just hope his motivation is more that–“I want be the most powerful” because otherwise it kills the character growth he had in Season 3.
I also am a little disappointed that the only reason Henry wants to work in Gold’s shop is to go undercover for Regina (and I love Regina). I was hoping that Henry would genuinely want to spend time with Gold and that Henry would become a light in Gold’s life just like Belle is. Since Henry and Neal never really got a chance to really develop a relationship it would have been nice if Henry actually wanted to get to know Gold better…..

ParticipantThere is a way that the writers can use Rumple’s current storyline with the hat without making him look like a complete jerk.
We know Rumple wants the hat so he can keep his power without being controlled. (It can also be argued that the reason why the previous dark ones wanted the hat is because they didn’t know about TLK or wouldn’t have been able to have TLK so the hat was the next best thing for breaking the curse and living or else they had to die to be free of the curse).
Why Rumple wanted the hat in flashbacks is because he needed his power to still find Bae but he wanted to eliminate the risk of being controlled. Anna got a hold of the dagger and controlled him but the next person might not have been so “nice”. Rumple’s “I want to be all-powerful” was a cover story. He wasn’t about to admit the truth to Anna.
Onto present day, why does Rumple still want the hat now? I think the answer lays in Rumple’s past as a spinner. When Rumple didn’t have magic, he was weak, he was lame, he was seen as the town coward and he felt he couldn’t protect his loved ones. He couldn’t stop Milah being “kidnapped” by pirates, he couldn’t stop Baelfire being drafted and likely killed in the ogre war. Rumple believes that if you have power, you’re in control. If you don’t have power, you’re at the mercy of those in control.
Rumple has always justified his magic use as “I need magic to protect the ones I love”. Him and Bae even had that conversation in one of the flashbacks (either the Return or Nasty Habits). Hook is only re-enforcing Rumple’s belief that he needs magic to protect Belle. After all, if Rumple hadn’t used his magic to manipulate Hook into the position he is in now, then Hook would’ve happily gone and broken Belle’s heart. For Rumple, Magic=Power=Protecting loved ones. Rumple has just come off the force servitude to Zelena where she had tried to force him to kill Belle, so of course he’s going to be a little more antsy of getting out from the dagger’s control whereas before the Zelena arc, where he’d been his own master, it wasn’t such an issue. It was on his list of things to do but it wasn’t the top priority.
All magic comes with a price!

KeymasterI get that after essentially being a slave, Rumple would want to make sure that it never happened again, I just wish it didn’t involve lying. If it really is to have all the power but be free of his curse, then can’t he explain this to Belle? I actually think she’d be supportive given that she saw what it was like when Rumple was controlled. The more Rumple lies, the bigger hole he digs.

I don’t think she would be very supportive, considering that to achieve what he wants, Rumple is going to trap (/kill?) magical beings inside the Sorcerer’s Hat.

Ah, good point.
Which brings up the point that if Rumple isn’t telling Belle, he knows how sketchy this all this, his motives may not necessarily be pure. (Then again, I’m not even sure what his motives are at present).
Does the hat kill people?? I’d like to know.
