It turns out that the terrible thing Emma did was rip out Violet’s heart and make the young girl break Henry’s heart so that Emma could have a tear to free Merlin.
Is this a step too far for Ms Swan? Was it necessary or justified? Can Henry ever forgive Emma?

October 25, 2015 at 9:21 pm #310814TheWatcherParticipantI see it as justified. Now before everyone throws puppies at me, Emma has a job to do. She has to free merlin to free herself and her family. If not, she will be consumed by darkness. She can spare henry’s feeling this one time to get the tear and then explain it all later after giving violet her heart back and letting that relationship run wherever it does.
Surely henry could understand that? I mean…honestly, I am surpised REGINA didn’t think of it. It seems like something she’d do. I personally think it was a brilliant plan. I think she should have told henry what she did and explained it all to violet too but yeah.
Can henry forgive her? I think so. Again, I think understanding the situation is key.
But then again, I’m just extremely dark myself. I would have done it.

October 25, 2015 at 10:11 pm #310846RumplesGirlKeymasterHere’s the thing that bothers me: the idea that Regina’s heartbreak wouldn’t be strong enough. Just because you move on doesn’t mean that the pain still isn’t there. It doesn’t mean that those memories don’t still have a hold on you. Regina can love Robin all she wants, losing Daniel was a major turning point in her life. Probably THE turning point. The idea that this lost isn’t strong enough comes across as a weak sauce of an excuse just so we could see Emma do something hurtful.
They wanted to kibosh the whole Regina-Daniel thing so that they could simultaneously kibosh Emma-Neal’s death and simultaneously (lots of simultaneously’s) split up Emma and Henry as a team and make Emma look like a true villain because true villains take hearts (Rumple, Regina, Cora, Zelena)
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 25, 2015 at 10:13 pm #310847RumplesGirlKeymasterOh one more thing. The one aspect this act from Emma does show is a reoccurring theme in the show that has been popping up since the very beginning: desperate souls do desperate things.
I like it when the show remembers some of its long standing themes.

Yes it was cruel for Emma to do so, but I just couldn’t help but enjoy how it was written and performed. Emma wants to do things for the greater good, but she’s fallen into Dark One temptations in order to do so. The Dark One has always been a master manipulator, and this was no exception. Both Rumple and Emma have justified their terrible actions as the Dark One. Dark magic on this show has always been compared to drug use. The more you experiment with dark magic, the more of an addict you become. Emma’s slipping because the more she’s tempted to use dark magic, the more necessary she thinks it is. She’s choosing what is easy instead of what is right.

The more dark magic Emma uses, the more she becomes addicted and the more addicted she becomes, the scarier it gets and the more desperate Emma becomes to rid herself of that dark magic. It’s a horrible cycle and it’s a narrative through point that OUAT actually sticks to. I give them credit when credit is due, and it’s due here. Now give poor Violet back her heart, Swan!
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 25, 2015 at 10:34 pm #310855TheWatcherParticipantI don’t understand why Emma even planned to use Henry’s tears though. I mean, she had no idea that Regina’s tears wouldn’t work. Why did she plan for it in advance? I would have understood if after taking the tear, the darkness rump showed up and told her it won’t work because such and such reason and then she decided that has to the violet heart thing and then during the ritual she “accidently” drops the bottle containing Regina’s tear and then Henry just so happens to show up at that point, wherein she takes his tear and sets merlin free.
It’s just all to convenient that this happened the way it did.
