After thinking about this question, one prediction I have is that Dr. Whale, who sort of works for Regina, may be involved in Kathryn Nolan’s disappearance from Storybook. If he really is the Big Bad Wolf, it would be in keeping with his character.
Kathryn visits David in hospital, and Dr. Whale is in the background
I think the photo reveals a car crash, as indicated by the air bag. The open door suggests that Kathryn may have been dragged from the car after the crash.
The promo for episode 14 shows Emma’s investigation of Kathryn’s disappearance and the details of the car crash close-ups[adrotate group="5"]"That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. When you leave it, there’s this feeling that you can’t shake. You just miss it." Neal Cassidy

According to Entertainment Weekly's interview of Adam Horowitz: “Have we seen the last death this season? Or can we expect more carnage? AH: 'Boy, I don’t know. You never know. As Henry said to Emma in the pilot, the final battle will be begin. Unfortunately, with final battles, there are casualties.'” http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/12/23/once-upon-a-time-scoop/
I think Kathryn is dead.

She was basically becoming her own person who wasn’t associated with David in anyway and therefore, was no longer a “character” in Storybrooke.
Although David has brief moments when he is tempted to step out of his character’s Storybrooke box and go after Mary Maragaret, he always finds a way to screw everything up and ruin the moment. With Kathryn, this is the first time we have seen a character stray from they way their FTL character should end up, and/or stray from the way Regina would want their Storybrooke character to end up. To have her FTL happy ending, Kathryn should have found Frederick’s equivalent in Storybrooke and wanted to be with him but she was too busy to even notice him when she bumped into him at the school. Instead she decided to be her own person and move to Boston to go to law school and start over with a fresh new life.
It seems like either Regina had to do away with Kathryn because she had broken out of her Storybrooke life or, once a character deviates from both their Storybrooke character and their FTL character, something goes horribly wrong with their existance. I never really thought about the fact that the characters could have the ability to make their own choices in Storybrooke and choose to NOT be with their FTL significant others. Since they ARE truly Fairy Tale characters, making decisions that go totally against both their Fairy Tale story and the Curse could cause them to be in a kind of limbo. Because then who would they really be? Take Kathryn for example. If she isn’t Abigail anymore and she isn’t David’s wife in Storybrooke (whose sole purpose is to keep him away from Mary Margaret), then who is she??? I don’t think she can leave Storybrooke, but assuming she could, – who would she be, what would her background be? She has existed in the vacuum of Storybrooke for years until Emma arrived – so would she even be able to exist outside of Storybrooke???
So this makes me wonder if we will ever find out what happened to Kathryn. Maybe she really just disappeared because she made a decision that caused her Storybrooke “character” to no longer exist.

Episode 1×17 is going to focus on the story of Alice in Wonderland. This episode follows closely after the disappearance of Kathryn. There are unconfirmed spoilers that “Wonderland” is actually another reality that is completely separate from Fairytale land. So, what if upon leaving Storybrook, Kathyrn was transported to Wonderland? 😮 😮 😮

Awesome theory! Although I am wondering if in her wandering the woods she might become Alice for Alice in Wonderland:)February 28, 2012 at 2:04 am #137804midnight drearyParticipantFebruary 28, 2012 at 2:45 am #137807rumplegoldfankristiParticipantI love the idea of Wonderland being the real world!! That would make total sense (in a OUaT sense of the word). If a character no longer exists in FTL or Storybrooke then they disappear and end up wandering around in Wonderland = the real world.
Do you ever wonder if the creators and actors from OUaT read these forums and just laugh???? I can see them all sitting together in a bar somewhere having a few drinks, reading our crazy theories . . .
February 28, 2012 at 2:57 am #137810hjbauParticipantThere was something about the wording. They are doing their twist on it. It just we knew that there is our world and the fairytale world and we know that the mad hatter has gone mad. I could just imagine someone from the fairytale world coming to our world and everyone thinking he was crazy after he returned to the fairytale world.
I don’t think that the episode is going to be about the story of Alice in Wonderland as we know it, but about how the hatter became mad so i just thought maybe he became mad because he visited our world. I could see that.
And i think that could tie in well with the idea that it is crazy to believe that everyone is a fairytale character. And i have this whole theory that the episodes that are about secondary non main characters are really about Emma. Like the Cinderella episode was about how Emma gave up Henry and how she has to decide to stay in town for him and stop running. And how the Hansel and Gretel episode was about how Emma wished that she could have custody and wishes she could know her parents and they used the story of Hansel and Gretel to tell Emma’s story. And if they do that with the Hatter episode then it could be about how he visited the real world and then everyone in the fairytale land thought he was mad and i think that could help Emma think about the insanity of believing Henry and they could further that plot. Especially if they intend to have Emma believe by the end of the season. I am not sure if that is how the episode is going to go, but i do think that they will further Emma’s plot in the episode and that would be a good way to go in my opinion. Then we could see her considering.
I am not sure if that made sense, but it made sense to me.
