So title says it a little bit: What I don’t understand.
And what I don’t understand is that (almost) everyone talks about the Disney fairytales and there relation to Once upon a time.
Most of the stories are not even Disney stories.. and I like the real stories much more.
For instance the end of Snow White, the real story tells that the prince wants to take Snow with him. When the dwarves carried the coffin to his horse, they led the coffin fall on the ground. The pieces of apple that stuck in Snow’s throat came out and she’s awake, no true love kiss. It’s not that I don’t like that version of Snow White, it’s just that many people talk about the Disney fairytales, while they’re not from Disney and I can’t stand that.. but maybe that’s because Disney is from the US and I’m not. And I grew up with the fairytales that you can see in a themepark in The Netherlands, where the are based stories on the real fairytales from Grimm and Andersen.

I do wish they’d cut down on the Disney references. Fairy tales weren’t originally for kids, at least not the kids of this day and age. But ABC is owned by Disney, and they did agree to do that. Hopefully, they’ll stop at the Perrault/Grimm tales and treat the Anderson tales closer to the originals.

I didn’t know that, but that explains a lot.
About Andersen, they have to put the girl with the red shoes (don’t know what the name in English is) in the show. That would be fun!
And about true love, yeah.. you’re right. 😉
May 6, 2012 at 2:37 pm #145648miaParticipantI understand, Snowrose! Maybe it’s also because I’m not from the US. I do love the Disney versions, but I’m a huge fan of the original stories. What I find funny about the true Snow White story, is that not only is there no true love’s kiss, as you say, but no kiss at all. It’s such an “unmagical” story somehow. It serves the moral of the story, but there’s no magic really.
I do think most people know the original stories are different from the Disney version. I like the mix, though. There aren’t that many Disney fairy tale films anyway.
It’ll be interesting how they do The Little Mermaid, though. That one is truly different from the Disney version …May 6, 2012 at 2:45 pm #145650snowroseParticipantI always thought that the only story where the prince kissed a princess awake was Sleeping Beauty.
I think I have to rent the fairytalebook of Andersen from the library, so I can read all his stories. Because the only books I have from fairytales are the books of the Efteling fairytales, they have the original story, but let the ‘horrible/creepy’ parts out of it. (Like the dancing shoes, the original story says that her feet, with shoes, cut off. But the Efteling story says that her shoes danced forever and she could walk normal).
May 6, 2012 at 2:50 pm #145652miaParticipantYes, I believe it is.
Now that I think f it, the prince of Snow White is creepy. 😯 He actually wanted the coffin, because he fell in love with a seemingly dead pretty girl … That’s just … I’m glad OUaT used the Disney version in this case, lol. And they did a great “before” story as well.
May 6, 2012 at 2:56 pm #145653arjay369ParticipantYeah, Disney has their hands in a lot of pies. Along with ABC, there’s ESPN, Pixar, Marvel, Hulu, Soapnet, A&E…to name a few.
In English, the Anderson tale you are referring to is “The Red Shoes” http://hca.gilead.org.il/red_shoe.html . It seems similar to the Grimms’ “The Girl Without Hands”.
They are most likely going to do a take on “The Little Mermaid”, although with a nod to Disney. I am actually interested in Scandinavia and wouldn’t mind knowing where to look for fairy tales of that region including Finland and Karelia because I know there’s some strange division on who considers who Scandinavian. 😉
I’m also hoping they do a take on the Selkie – be it a Selkie maiden or a Selkie lord. I’m not into mermaids but seals will do just fine, hehe.
May 6, 2012 at 3:11 pm #145655hjbauParticipantI think they are doing a good middle ground. They make the disney references because a lot of people are familiar with them especially with the names of the characters, but then at the same time they have really dark back stories and dark thoughts about why the characters are doing what they are doing. It is a good mix, in my opinion.
May 6, 2012 at 3:15 pm #145656snowroseParticipantMaybe it is a good mix and now I know that ABC is actually from Disney.. It explains why they are referring to it.
But I love to see more real fairytales we don’t know so well.
May 6, 2012 at 3:39 pm #145659hjbauParticipantI like that they assume that we know the story. Like they don’t show the story of Pinocchio, but rather they show the story after the story we know. I like that. It is only Snow’s story that we see all of and it is even different. Like what Snow did to Regina and showing the story with the huntsman and i think the apple incident will be different as well. There will be more to it. I like that and yet they keep the familiar, the dwarfs names and the true loves kiss and the queen as an old hag. They keep the familiar and yet change the story and make it their own.
