What I actually ment was that they could use a story we don’t know so wel and then change a little bit. But I don’t know which stories you all in the US know, I think the same as here. Accept the Indian Water Lillies, but maybe you know that story too.
I like the stories they put in, that they are different then the stories we know. That’s what I love about the show. It reminds me of an tv serie in The Netherlands: de sprookjesboom (The Fairytale Tree), where all the characters live together: the witch from Hansel and Gretel talks to the Giant from Little Thumb.
It’s in dutch, but I could put a link here if you like.

Disney is just my thing, although I’m open to and enjoy exploring all versions of the fairytales. I have read or seen multiple takes on Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, and I once wrote my own twist on Snow White for a college assignment.

Really? I would love to read that! I love the stories of Snow White with a twist (like Mirror Mirror).
And I read the story of Beauty and the Beast in one of my fairytalebooks and that was totally different from the Disney-version. That’s why I love that story more in the Disney-version, because that was the first version I ever saw and I love it (I love the musical too 😉 )

I’d like to read that, too! I’ve read two different takes on it as manga versions. Quite cute and funny ones, too.
Did you read the Beauty and the Beast from Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve or Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont? I’ve only read latter. The interesting thing is, that the beginning of the Disney version was much closer to the original story, but they changed it completely. If you have the Diamond Edition DVD/Blu-Ray you can watch that beginning.
May 6, 2012 at 4:50 pm #145669snowroseParticipantHonestly, I have no idea which version. I read it in the latest fairytalebook from The Efteling.
May 6, 2012 at 4:54 pm #145671miaParticipantIf it’s less than 100 pages, then it’s Beaumont. The one from Villeneuve is over 200 pages long and utterly boring. xD Too many uninteresting things in it. The Beaumont version is much more fairy tale like.
May 6, 2012 at 5:10 pm #145673snowroseParticipantIn the book each story has 3 to 5 pages, so I still have no idea.
The books (there are two) are lovely, they’re also versions in German and English.

They were given free reign of the Disney vault, tons of free material, no copyright infringement. And the most familiar material to I’m going to hazard, the majority of their audience. Tons of people honestly haven’t ever read the fairy tales anymore. A lot of people don’t know what really happened to the little mermaid.
It was sort of a given once you found out a) Snow White was awakened by a kiss b) the dwarfs had their Disney names and c) Jiminy Cricket vs. nameless cricket that you were going to see Disney characters.
If there is a Disney version of the story, I believe we will always see nods to it. If there’s no Disney version of it, then you have a much better chance of it focusing more on how it was originally.
At the same time, there just doesn’t seem to be a chance of us really getting the gruesomeness some original fairy tales had. The chopping off of body parts and I’m pretty sure cannibalism (all those roasted human hearts and livers people wanted to eat) isn’t going to pass an 8pm network tv standard. Admittedly, I’m not all that broken up about that particular aspect.
May 9, 2012 at 11:45 pm #146167angiebelleParticipantHehe…I think I may still have the story I wrote somewhere back at my parents house, but I’m not sure where it is. It was a very short take on the story- basically from Snow’s point of view. She wakes up, sees the prince, and runs screaming because she is being kissed by a stranger. If I ever dig it up the next time I visit my parents, I’ll post it. 🙂

Awesome 🙂 I would love to read it too 😀

Strangely, me either 😉
