Yup, SK, I believe you have it exactly right!
It is really deep …and yet simple… and all about the two of them. She pushed/ goaded him almost to the point of mocking him to get him to tell her, and he pushed back. I don’t believe that Hook is ready to trust Emma’ s emotions (or his own, completely) to handle just exactly how much he has given up from the moment he got back to EF and through the following year ~just to be by her side again. I think he also knows she is a bit scared of how deep those emotions could run. That is why his remark about her heart being able to be broken was HUGE . It was a very bluntly honest reminder to her that she has a great capacity to love because she has a great capacity to FEEL. And he is there .

March 24, 2014 at 11:09 pm #255364RumplesGirlKeymasterI think what Hook is hiding from Emma is what he gave up to come back he doesn’t want to tell her what he sacrificed to get back to her.
Like what?
His ship? it’s SB in 317. We have pics of that
His heart? Doubtful. He’s clearly emotional and has feelings unlike other non-hearted people we’ve seen.
So…what else?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 24, 2014 at 11:24 pm #255365KebParticipantHe’s probably ashamed of some of what he got up to in his depression after losing her. Neal promised he’d see them again; Hook only vowed he’d think of her every day.
If he gave up hope of getting back to her, he might have done some awful things. We know he’s capable of it. He’s cuddly…but we’ve also seen him kill people and torture people (if less so than our queen and imp).

Neal sends the note to Hook so that Hook can save Emma/Henry since Neal perhaps knows about Walsh and the WW plans. Hook cannot let anyone in town know that Neal sent him because they don’t know who the WW is in SB and when she might be eavesdropping. By revealing the truth that he is working with Neal it would put Neal in further danger.
This would allow for some good CaptainFire and also unite the fandom. I don’t know if it will happen this way, but I like to think it’s possible.

Welll, there’s the dramatic mystery hanging out there in the air and we can all only suppose, yes?
It’s fairly obvious that the year he spent searching for Emma before he *at last* found her will be addressed in the remaining episodes.

Is it?
312: goes on adventures with JR until he gets a message
313: was sailing the realms until a bird landed on his ship
314: admits he was having a “swashbuckling” time until the message
The only thing consistent in his story is that he was out having some sort of adventure.

Yes, it is 🙂 What you have listed are things that we already have heard and seen. The remaining episodes, as they do for every story line and every character, tell us more and fill in more blanks. This is what A and E do for every character. Hook is not the exception.

An adventure that has yet to be defined, has it not? It will be in the remaining episodes. Starting, I imagine, with The Jolly Roger, but maybe sooner when he and Henry head out into the night, or he meets up with Ariel as seen in the future set pics.
Every character on this show has unknown histories, personal denials, hidden demons plaguing their last year. All are being exposed as we go.

YES, for that bit I bolded in particular. JMo has said in recent interviews, when talking about Neal and Hook, that those two have a relationship and mutual respect and whatnot, which frankly makes no sense judging by what we saw of them in S3A, but it WOULD make sense if they’ve been secretly working together in S3B. So that’s the hope I’m clinging to, because my kingdom for some mature, emotional interaction with present day CaptainFire.
Even if Neal’s being held captive by Zelena in SB, it would still make sense to keep it hush hush if he’s the one who sent Hook the message, because if word about that gets out, then there’s the chance that Zelena would find out that Neal’s been working against her, so Hook’s keeping it secret to try and protect Neal. Which, going back to my desire for CaptainFire, would be rather glorious, considering how differently things played out between them in NL back in the day when Hook did the opposite of protecting him from Pan, so YAY character progression.

I’m not denying that. I’m just saying that we cannot say for certain what he was doing or what he was not doing because it hasn’t been shown. Things are only obvious from certain perspectives. Someone could claim that Hook was lying on a beach drinking rum and it would be a legit theory because until shown other wise, all theories are legit.

I agree, but again you’re making an declarative statement about what it “obviously” is. IMO nothing is obvious right now except that Hook is lying, probably for very good reasons, but reasons that have not yet been fleshed out on screen–only in headcanon. My problem isn’t so much your thesis but your language–as if it has been shown and is absolute.
I think it’s very possible Hook spent a year trying to get back, and I think it’s very possible he did not. But nothing is certain and/or obvious.

(Soft smile) I didn’t say what Hook had been doing was certain. What I said was ~it was fairly obvious that what happened (in that year…etc) would be addressed in future episodes. That still stands. It is fairly obvious because that is what A and E DO… Address things in future episodes.
I said we can all suppose what happened about …Hook …or anyone. Our “suppositions” just weren’t on the same page.
but small word differences aside… No matter . We will find out soon!
🙂
I’m out until tomorrow or Wednesday night. thanks for the conversation!
