Sci-Fi Girl
ParticipantIs Belle’s mother really dead? Or do you think her father was lying to her? Why did she forget what happened?
Because if she was just knocked unconscious during the events, as her father’s story seemed to imply, then there would be no memories for her to recover!
Did perhaps someone (like Rumple or someone else) save the mother, and take her away, in exchange for Belle remaining?

KeymasterI don’t think it’s a lie and I think she is really dead.

ParticipantI admit, part of me is wondering if Maurice is holding something back. I think her mother died, but what is the real cause of her memory loss? Just the trauma of the event? Or did a certain sorceror take her memories away.
I will admit it would be interesting if the reason Rumple takes Belle originally is because he thinks it’s funny. Never deal with Rumplestiltskin because you’ll never come out on top. Maurice approaches him once again and this time the cost is the girl he “fixed” to begin with. The imp would find it quite irresistable to deal for her the second time.

Participanti’m pretty sure Belle’s mom is truly dead. OUAT at the end of the day is part of the Disney product line and while they have leeway on playing with fairytale characters’ plot lines they do not deviate from what is Disney cannon. In Beauty & the Beast, Maurice is a widower. In the original B&B tales, he is also a widower. Changing that probably isn’t going to happen. I think the point of the plot line point was Belle could have eventually found out the truth without having to have ventured to see the Rock Trolls, and her memory loss was simply PTSD. The flashback tie in was that it brought about how Rumple was called into play by Maurice in the Ogre Wars

ParticipantAbsolutely, but this is also Once. I wouldn’t discount anything. They’ve given us some strange, odd storylines in the name of “bold” storytelling.

ParticipantI think Belle’s mom is really dead and that Maurice was just saving Belle the gory details. In all likelihood the ogres ripped Belle’s mom apart and Belle’s mind went blank in order to help her cope with the event. It wold also explain why Maurice was so against Belle trying to get her memory back.
In the Manhattan flashback, one of the soldiers said something along the lines of “When the ogres rip you limb from limb, pray that they are quick”. I doubt the ogres would suddenly be considerate just because they are faced with a woman.

ParticipantI think she is dead but I agree, I think something is very shady going on. It seems like Belle’s memories were taken to me and that Maurice was trying to keep her in the dark. So she is dead, yes, but the nature of her death may not be what Maurice told her it was.

ParticipantBelle’s mom really is dead but she may yet appear again in flashbacks. Maurice withholding information would work to drive another wedge between father and daughter when the spell of shattered sight is finally cast. If Rumple had anything to do with removing Belle’s memories of her mother’s passing, then that might also create yet more tension between husband and wife.

ParticipantMaurice telling his daughter that her mother died a hero sounds a lot better than telling her that her mother died screaming as the ogres ripped her limb from limb.

ParticipantIn the case of Belle’s mother, Dead is Dead.
Although, if the writers want to get creative with the events of her (most likely) death, I wouldn’t be opposed.
