So we’re to believe that Snow and Charming of the past did something so horrible and yet it never seemed to impact their consciences until now, when the plot suddenly calls for it? Yeah right.
Right this really bothers me.
Also, why didn’t Mal seek revenge on these two in the months following them stealing the egg? Why was she just chilling in her castle with a pet unicorn?
Regina stole the curse before Snowing stole Mal’s baby. Mal may have been depressed and her punishment in Storybrooke is a lot harsher.
Mal had to protect the failsafe no matter what. Even when she was killed, she still had to protect the failsafe in Zombie form. Mal failed to protect her child. As Winifred Sanderson put it “His (Her) punishment will not be to die but to live forever with his (her) guilt”

The last time the Charming’s saw Maleficent she roasted some guards because they were in her way to the Tree of Knowledge. I can totally buy Snow making a huge judgement call on any of her spawn.
This is also after Snow was proved wrong that Regina could be redeemed. Her faith in ‘goodness in all’ has been shaken.

Didn’t she already know the Dark Curse was coming? She just had to wait for that to happen.
One thing I didn’t like was the assumption that its ok to transfer evil into a living being because its TOTALLY not really a baby.

Yeah that. And even if Mal’s baby had been born a dragon, did Snow and Charming really think it would be a good idea to make it the most evil creature ever to live? They weren’t thinking clearly, because that evil creature would’ve grown up to terrorize the kingdom. But whatevs.

This is why I don’t think this is a retcon of the Charming’s characters. They have both made choices based on a very myopic view of the world and DO NOT think about their choices long term. Which is why they are so easily manipulated.

But for Snow not to recognize that evil isn’t born, it’s made, feel pretty out of left field. She knew Regina before she became the Evil Queen. Snow was also forced to make hard choices in which she could be selfish (save her mother) or be noble (let her mother die and not kill another person). This whole idea that Emma is doomed to evil and that Snow and Charming can’t lead their daughter down the “light” path makes no sense. Snow seems to think it’s a foregone conclusion but her own past should tell her otherwise.

I think at this point in Snow’s life when she makes this decision she doesn’t have any examples of people overcoming darkness once they start down that road. She knew Regina when she was younger, but at this point in the story there are no redeemable qualities in Regina.
That would create a lot of fear in a new mother who is told her baby has this ‘potential for darkness’.

you mean like Snow herself who took a potion to forget Charming, went after the Evil Queen with every intention to kill her and would be doomed to become equally evil but was only pulled back because of Charming’s unwavering love and loyalty and the choice he made to stand by her and help her through her “heart of darkness”?

I think even with that brief moment in time the idea that Snow’s baby has inherent darkness would drive her to make the choices she made in this episode.
Taking a potion to forget and inadvertently becoming dark is not the same thing as being born with darkness.

Here’s the thing though…Snowing believe themselves to be good, yet still believe their spawn could be evil. So if you just take that logic and flip it, why should they assume that just because Maleficent is evil, that her spawn would turn out the same as her? They’re operating with the mindset that their child might not follow in their footsteps, but obviously, without a doubt, Maleficent’s child will absolutely turn out just like its mother. Hypocritical much?
