Recall that in episode 3, David “awoke” in SB when Mary Margaret read to him about Prince Charming and Snow White’s meeting at the troll bridge.
Yet, David then went missing. He was still in a comatose, though functional, state as he walked out of the hospital and towards the troll/toll bridge. At the time, everyone believed he was searching for Mary Margaret/Snow because of the FTL flashbacks to when Prince Charming met Snow White. Was he really looking for her by the toll bridge though?
Back in SB, Mary Margaret, Graham, Henry and Emma found him unconscious by the river bed next to the toll bridge. When Mary Margaret gave him the kiss of life, David woke up but suffered from amnesia and had no recollection of walking out the SB hospital in the first place. We all know that it wasn’t until ep. 5 that David saw the windmill and was implanted will false beliefs about his SB identity.
In ep. 15, though, we saw the same phenomenon occur to David. Mary Margaret found him in the woods in a functional comatose state, and he stared vacantly past her when she tried to get his attention. At the time he said, “I’m looking.” He wasn’t looking for Mary Margaret though, since she was right in front of him. What was he looking for though?
Finally, at the end of the episode, Emma directed Ruby to look for clues by the toll bridge because that is where David went on his last “dream walk.” It’s a crazy hunch Emma told Ruby, but low and behold, Ruby used her canine ability to search the the same river bank where Mary Margaret found David in episode 3.
There, Ruby found the embellished wooden box with a human heart in it. Could David, in his dream state, have been searching for this box all along?

I doubt it is his heart, because that would give Regina far, far too much power over him and Mary Margaret. If it is Kathryn’s, then maybe something happened in FTL and he is Charming looking for Abigail’s heart. I doubt that, though.
This is an interesting theory, and explains why they show us David’s problem again in this episode, before they find the box, but I don’t think this is the case. I think the box was planted by Either Regina or Mr. Gold in an attempt to either frame Mary Margaret or accomplish something else. Mr. Gold may want to force Emma’s hand, and make her look deeper into what is going on. But I still just think it is Regina framing Mary Margaret.

This explains why he was wandering about the woods, going into strange states claiming “I’m looking.” It also explains why when he first came out of the coma, he went to the toll bridge (where his and Snow’s love was born) looking for his heart. Mary Margaret’s fingerprints are on the heart box because she possesses it completely. Regina could have easily have removed the heart from David, who was in a comma for 28 years in the SB hospital.

It just seems a lot like when the Sheriff was wandering around in the woods trying to remember and find the wolf. And maybe David was looking for Snow, but was just really confused when he found her because she doesn’t seem herself and what she was talking about made no sense to him.

Which obviously wasn’t anywhere for him to find. It makes sense for him to leave the town and look around the woods because the woods are the same and familiar so he might get his bearings there.
When I watched it before I knew he was comatose I thought he was there for the same reason as MM–to look for Kathryn. To see if she’s collapsed somewhere or find her dead body or at least find some kind of CLUE. It makes sense to me that after talking to Emma he would do that. It also makes sense to me that MM would do that. What I can’t figure out is why Emma didn’t arrange a real search party herself. MM said a lot that he didn’t understand in that state but she did specifically talk about looking for Katherine and that’s when he responded, “I’m looking.”
I think either he could’ve been looking for either thing.

Interesting thought! I also think it was planted by Regina to set Mary Margaret up. I think even if Ruby hadn’t found it as quickly as she had, it wouldn’t have gone unnoticed for too long. I initially thought that it was the box that contained Graham’s heart.
I loved this episode though, it really had my head spinning! 🙂
