From the “Tallahassee” OUAT Official Podcast:
“We only caught a glimpse of his [Neal’s] life in New York. What’s going on with him there, what he’s doing and what’s happening…is all stuff that remains to be revealed, and that is all something we intend to reveal sooner rather than later.”
“He could be a bond trader.”
“Could be…a left fielder for the Yankees.”
“Could be a conman-”
“Could be a model.” – K&H
I find it interesting that the writers spent that much time emphasizing Neal’s activities in NYC. But how could Neal’s profession be so interesting to the overarching story? This makes me think of two possibilities.
First, I doubt it would be some boring old honest job, like accountant or car salesman. Why bring it up otherwise?
Instead, I’m thinking Neal might have gotten involved in something shady. Maybe something that would darken his character and complicate any possibility of him easily reuniting Emma and Henry. (Personally, I really hate this idea, but it could delay Henry/Emma’s Happily Ever After and perhaps allow a romantic development between Emma and some other suitor if Neal doesn’t “get his act together.” Yup, like I said, I hope this isn’t it. It seems like every character and their dog are on some sort of redemption arc these days.)
The second possibility I’m thinking is that maybe he’s the book’s author? Now, I don’t know how Neal would have learned the real stories (since we know August took off after he got the money, and we don’t know how much they discussed in that alley), but since the writers haven’t outright told us who the author is, I’m thinking this might be possible.
Another thought that’s not sitting right with me: I admit that August seems to be involved a lot more than we saw in Season 1, but it looks to me that August was out of the picture by the time Emma receives the envelope from Phuket. So – who arranged Henry’s adoption? Did August fly back (three weeks after Henry’s birth) to bring him to Gold? Was he working from afar? Or maybe Neal didn’t quite “stay away” like he promised and he was the one to orchestrate all of this? 😕
Thoughts?

Yes, I don’t like the idea because I want Bae to have turned his life around, but since he’s Bae, I bet he got into more trouble unfortunately, and they’ll rip my heart out again by keeping Emma and Bae separated that way.
His casting call described him as ‘For Once Upon a Time, the role of Jack is being cast (as a “guest role with option”). He’s in his 20s or 30s, charismatic, sexy and mysterious, but also loyal and kind, and he’s running from his past in a land full of danger.
This was the casting call for “Jack”, which I think was the codeword for Neal/Bae. It could apply to him running away from his past as a thief, and maybe he’s cleaned up his act since then. Or it could mean that he got into worse trouble later on, and is running from it now. I hope it’s the former, but yes, since he’s Bae and all, I’m bracing myself for it to be the latter.
The second possibility I’m thinking is that maybe he’s the book’s author? I thought Bae might turn out to be the author of Henry’s book before tonight’s episode, but now I think it must have been the Blue Fairy because I don’t think August would have known about it otherwise unless she knew about it because of her spying on Bae over the years too. I would really love for him to be the author though because of Henry’s connection with it.

It’s possible that August helped because the Blue Fairy may have instructed him too, but I can’t ever see Bae doing something like that.

Plus, i looked up the statute of limitations on Grand larceny in AZ–there isn’t one, so technically he’s still a wanted man (wana bet Emma tries to use this to her advatage when he does show up and she wants to keep him from Henry?).
Maybe something that would darken his character and complicate any possibility of him easily reuniting Emma and Henry.
God i hope not. Those two have been through enough, plus, if he’s Bae that boy deserves at least ONE break in his life. And honestly, while i don’t want a quick resolution, I don’t want them to drag it out too long. The last thing I want is for Emma’s happiness to be the very end game. If they do that then the show will become ABOUT emma finding love. I think the Emma/Neal thing kind of needs to be at least mostly resolved before the end of season three to keep things from going stagnate.
The second possibility I’m thinking is that maybe he’s the book’s author?
Possibly. I mean it’s looking more and more likely that August is working with Blue, so maybe when August went AWOL, the baton got passed? Plus, if he’s Bae it might explain the illustrations. He could have inherited Milla’s artistic talent.
Or maybe Neal didn’t quite “stay away” like he promised and he was the one to orchestrate all of this?
No. No, no, no, no, no!!! August working with BF, i can semi understand using Henry as a way to get Emma here, but not Neal. The writers were careful to make him a good guy but believably a bad one from Emma’s POV. Giving his own kid to Gold would completely undo that. ESPECIALLY if he’s Bea.
November 7, 2012 at 8:29 pm #159954elleParticipantI doubt Neal orchestrated all this–I think he and August may have stayed in contact a bit. August knew where to send the postcard. But I doubt Neal would do that to Emma (he loves her too much) nor his son, if he even knows about Henry, which is doubtful.
As for Neal’s lifestyle, it looked rather lonely–his bedroom is certainly full of object (including the dreamcatcher Emma had shown him) that perhaps remind him of the past and remind him of the good times he had. 🙂 The way he entered his room reminded me a bit of how Emma entered her apartment in the pilot after her ‘date.’ She entered the place and left her shoes in the hall because no one would be bothered. The same with Neal–he just dumped his stuff, and both of them looked so lonely.
November 7, 2012 at 8:38 pm #159955obisgirlParticipantMaybe he has a legit job now and isn’t a thief anymore.
November 8, 2012 at 2:43 am #159988elleParticipantI think that is possible, too. The place where he lives does not look like it costs a lot of money, unless he is careful with how he spends his money so as not to get suspicion. If he is a thief still, he would have to be even more careful–he is still a wanted man. 🙂

Yeah! ^Exactly what I was thinking of when I mentioned he might be involved in something “shady” that might prevent him from going to Storybrooke right away. Of course, he might just be indecisive about starting up a relationship with Emma again, but there also might be something keeping him from Storybrooke for a while (although I hope not!)
November 8, 2012 at 9:49 am #160003SlurpeezParticipantI was under the impression that “Neal” got a fake ID when he moved to Canada, which would help to explain how he was able to return to the US, specifically to NYC. He could just have a normal job. Whatever his job is, I have a feeling it will involve communications and/or music based on his musical posters and his old-fashioned records and mics.
