This is a question that I haven’t really heard a lot of people ask lately, but I think with the recent episode, we’ll see more of him (at least in flashback). Last time we saw him he was still wooden, and then just sort of mysteriously disappeared from Granny’s Inn.
We know that he was the one who sent the postcard to Neal at the beginning of the season and we know he has known for at least 11 years that Neal was Bae. I have a hard time believing that Neal/Bae and August didn’t at least have some contact or that August didn’t at least keep track of him. Obviously (at least I think) August knew Bae/Neal was an important person in the curse. It’s hard for me to believe that he wouldn’t at least keep tabs on him. Esspecially because when he met Gold/Rumple, he seemed to know a lot about Bae.
And another thing, how did August know about Bae? It’s not as though he just randomly guessed. Someone had to have told him which is why I don’t think Bae and Emma met out of “fate.” That has never been a strong theme in the show and I think maybe we are just supposed to think they met out of fate. I am very distrustful of the blue fairy and August at this point. Knowing how greedy August is, maybe there was something in it for him to make sure Bae and Emma met.
I don’t know what to think. I’d like to hear what some other Once Upon a Timers think about what his role in all of this is, where he is, and how he knew about Bae.

Why? August is a threat: He knows about the dagger, and actually tried to use it to control Gold. Gold has good reasons to not want lots of people knowing about that dagger, especially with magic back.
Alternatively, Gold’s been a little distracted since magic came back with his Bae quest and Belle’s presence. Maybe he didn’t take the precaution of securing August. August knows full well that Gold’s aware now of what he knows and only let him go because he wanted the curse ended. If he’s got any sense, he went into hiding outside of Storybrooke–assuming that magic allowed him the ability to do so. He was never cursed, so he could leave without losing his memories.
It’s possible he has other motives for hiding out–shame or fear with regards to his father/Blue. Or some temptation out there. But at this point I strongly suspect that either Gold knows exactly where he is, or August is doing everything in his power to prevent that.

A father son relationship still is sacred to him. I would not be surprised if the Blue fairy has him though. THose two are definately in cahoots, and I think this will also answer the question of how he knew about Bae. I think the Blue Faerie might have been without magic but not without knowledge

If he expected Nealfire to be coming to town, he may have been wary of what his reaction to him would be. Nealfire’s presence in town would also likely cause Emma to be hating on August for having broken them up. He was certainly ashamed to be face to face with his father now that Geppetto remembered everything and knew that that guy who had been working with him, who hadn’t done his father proud, was his son. So I think there’s ample reason for him to have fled to the one person who already knew all of his secrets and hadn’t disowned him: Blue.
Like SpinningGold said, there is an upcoming ep where we’ll finally be getting some August answers. We don’t have spoilers confirming where he’s been all season, but we do know that something significant will happen concerning him.
As for the question of how August knew about Bae, there’s a whole thread discussing that here: https://oncepodcast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=2941 🙂
March 1, 2013 at 5:35 am #176058CrownedWithLaurelsParticipantI had read a little about the rumor going around about Eion Bailey not getting along with people on set. I came across this on tumblr and it made my day. Series of gifts and I’m on my phone so can’t just post the pics without it taking a crazy amount of time. Anyway, as an August fan, I was really happy to see this. 🙂

1. August Ran away, leaving Emma in the foster home.
2. Spends some time on the road.
3. Is taken to Neverland by the Shadow.
4. Meet Baelfire?
5. Meets Tinkerbell – aka the fairy August mentions in The Return
6. Escapes Neverland around the same time as Neal and Hook. Possibly the exact same time.I suppose it’s also possible that August could be working for the Shadow and/or Peter Pan. There’s been a lot of talk about Peter Pan having Foresight like Rumple, so maybe PP sent August back to our world to make certain events unfold.
Maybe Tinkerbell and Blue Fairy know each other. Tinkerbell is working on BF’s orders. Tink helps/guides August.
May 27, 2013 at 5:47 am #196242PheeParticipantOne thing I’ve become almost positive of is that during the time after he left Emma, he spoke to people about having come from a magical land, and THO started keeping tabs on him, in a similar way to what they did with Owen.
If so, and if THO has ties to PP and NL, it’s entirely possible that he was taken away during that time. I’m also partial to the theory that he may have been taken to NL during his puppet-boy days though. Guess he could have been taken there multiple times, who knows?

Possibly the exact same time.I agree about this, I’ve theorized much the same and I even pitched this as being ONCE’s version of the Pleasure Island chapter of Pinocchio’s life, with this take of Neverland bearing a lot of resemblance in spirit to the place boys were taken to become donkeys in the Disney adaptation.
May 27, 2013 at 12:35 pm #196251RumplesGirlKeymasterI’m with Demileto. I think he went to NL at some point (I don’t know if it was before or after he brought Emma here, though) because NL resembles Pleasure Island. There, he met Bae who told him all about Rumple and the dagger.
If it was after Emma came through the wardrobe, then August would have been on NL from about 1983-1991 if he came through again with Bae. Then they went their separate ways. I’ve wondered how a boy of 8 survived after the last time we saw him.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 27, 2013 at 8:43 pm #196314PriceofMagicParticipantI don’t think August went to Neverland. It would complicate things too much timeline wise and also would be introducing August back into the Story when his story is pretty much done. I do agree though that perhaps Tinkerbell had some interaction with August.
Just a thought, what if Tinkerbell helped Bae escape Neverland because she was in love with him. She continued to watch over Bae whilst he was in our world hence why she maybe gave August enough information to pretend to be Bae- she was protecting the real Bae from his father.
All magic comes with a price!
