Personal headcanon
I think Neal is locked up in the same place as Rumple. Zelena is torturing Neal to get Rumple to do her bidding. Watching his son being tortured has driven him mad.

I’m pretty sure you’re right about Neal being held captive in a nearby cell. She’s positively Wicked. I wonder if she captured Neal from the EF before her curse? Or from Storybook, after her curse.

I think from the EF before the Curse. I think Neal might still have his memories and sent Hook the message via bird

Part of me is really thinking he’s a monkey now. That him and Belle spent the year looking for Rumple and came close, but Neal was taken. That poor man can never have a rest. Really, that whole ‘Stiltskin family is great at being imprisoned, controlled, sucked down portals, abandoned. No wonder Belle fits in so well them.

I’m thinking Zelena has Neal prisoner, but in a different place than Rumple. She has somehow erased some of Rumple’s memories or what happened with Pan did, so Rumple doesn’t know he has reunited with Bae already . Zelena is using the dagger to control Rumple, but part of her motivation is to help him get back to Bae. She wants to be able to fulfill the reasons behind the last curse that Regina did even if she has to manufacture things like Rumple & Bae’s reunion.

I like this. If she could erase Rumple’s memories then Rumple would only remember that Bae was dead and now Rumple is being kept in a cage. That’s a recipe for insanity.

Wicked Witch has Rumple, controlling him with the dagger. She forced Rumple to cast this new dark curse, using Neal’s heart. Ultimate revenge (especially if Rumple was her biological father). This would explain why Rumple seems to have gone crazy in Storybrooke. He killed his son.
I really hope this theory is wrong. I’m a SwanFire shipper personally. I hope this isn’t the case.
I hope he’s a flying monkey and Emma can break the curse.

I would be lying if I were to say this hasn’t crossed my mind as well. But I just…can’t see them ending the Rumple and Neal story that way. It’s what started the show. To have it come to a close by Rumple murdering his son to cast a curse for a half season villain. After the sacrifice Rumple made in 311, to protect Bae and Belle, this would be a giant slap in the face. And for me personally, would be a loss of a lot of hope. you don’t come back from murdering your child.

*Rocks back and forth* 🙁 No offense Pan14 but I loath this theory. LOL! It did kinda cross my mind too, but it feels so abrupt to end Neal’s character arc after ALL that build up since SEASON 1! As if watching Season 1,2, and 3A was for nothing. I doubt they can give him closure within this season, since he wasn’t featured that prominently in this episode. It will feel so convoluted and rushed, after 2 1/2 seasons of development. :/
