The way I saw it, the shadow offered him youth at the price of giving up his son. And so when Malcolm decided to give up Rump, the shadow turned him into a boy. Since Malcolm was an adult I dont think his belief worked in NL

I think we need the full conversation between Shadow and Malcolm.

Because the Shadow didn’t outright tell him what to do. It just told him why pixie dust wasn’t working.
