Interesting.
[adrotate group="5"]May 19, 2013 at 4:13 pm #195437obisgirlParticipantSo in season one finale of Once, after Emma woke him up with True Love’s kiss, Henry said “I love you” to Emma and this year, we saw Henry saying “I love you” to Regina in SOTM. Does that change anyone’s opinion about him ❓
May 19, 2013 at 4:20 pm #195438RumplesGirlKeymasterIn the official podcast for SOTM A and E said that he’s always loved Regina, he’s just doesn’t like her sometimes, which makes total sense in my head. She is his mother and like real families, we may not like what they do sometimes but we still love them.
I don’t need Henry to say I love you to Regina every time she almost does something really stupid and is stopped at the last second. She needs that, but I–as a viewer who can clearly see that Henry has always loved Regina–don’t. Remember in Broken, Henry begged Emma to prevent the town from killing Regina because “she’s still my mom!” But I’ve never been on board with hating Henry; I think he’s a very sweet child who really just wants a family and it’s hard for me to fault him for that. And like many 11yr olds, he often does drastic outlandish things because 11yr olds don’t see gray, they see black and white and take extreme measures. Would I have taken dynamite to blow up the well? No, but I’m 26 and see the world in a more nuanced way. Henry does not: he exists in extremes. Sometimes the writers put lines in his mouth that are just not worthy of a show like Once (like that horrible pizza line) but I don’t fault Henry for that.
The major problem that I hear is that people conflate Henry and Jared. My own best friend does this. After Welcome to Storybrooke, he told me that he hated Henry because he couldn’t stand the actor and I tried to explain to him why that didn’t make any sense. Jared has room to grow but I think it’s wrong to hate on a character just because of the actor."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 20, 2013 at 1:15 pm #195505obisgirlParticipantWhat about Hook now?

Hook gave me whiplash in the season finale. I’ll take this apart from a the timeline and I’ll see what conclusion I come to because I’m still not sure about him…
NL of the past: he starts off almost threatening Bae, he’s very menacing (in my eyes) to a poor young boy who was just carried by a magical shadow. It’s only after he learns that he is Rumple and Milah’s son that he becomes nice. He then protects Bae from Felix and then we see him teaching Bae to sail. All these things warmed my heart and made me want to like Hook more (because I feel so bad for Bae that anyone showing him some measure of love and affection I tend to like). But in the telling of his past, I think Hook was speaking the truth as he knows it, but I also think he was fishing for information about Rumple and how to kill him. And while I believe that Hook would have let Bae stay aboard the JR up until that last second when the Lost Ones took Bae, the fact is he did let them take Bae. Hook, like Rumple, is so consumed by jealousy that it clouded his chance to be a father. Bae was spot on: Rumple and Hook are very much alike. And because my heart already belongs to Rumple, I find it hard to see Hook in the same light that I am constantly seeing with Rumple.
SB of the present: Talk about back and forth! He helps out GOAT, learns he’s going to die, so he switches sides to the Charmings, and then once he has the bean and Emma pleads with him to help out the Charmings (because they understand each other) he STILL RUNS AWAY! I know the CS’ers will have a different perspective on why Hook came back (and you all may be right) by my reading of this scene is that it was learning that Bae was dead (the son her wronged and wished to make amends to) that brought him back in the end. He owes Bae an apology and needs to ask for forgiveness, just like Rumple does. That’s why he came back with the bean. But still, he took the bean and everyone almost died.So where do I stand with Hook now?
1) He still shot Belle. That’s…very hard for me to get over. (And yes I know. Rumple killed Milah but Milah is up there on my list of most hated characters)
2) He is obviously a man who loved Milah deeply, so deeply that he’s willing to overlook that Bae is also Rumple’s son.
3) He is consumed by jealousy and anger and his need for revenge. Give him a funny voice and tighter leather pants and he’d be Rumple.
4) In the end, he did come back. That’s important. Without knowing that Henry had been taken, he still came back.I talked myself into circles. 😆
I think I will really warm up to Hook in S3. I think when we see him work with Rumple and the Charmings to find Henry I will really like him. Until then I remain a bit undecided."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 20, 2013 at 2:53 pm #195517obisgirlParticipant@RumplesGirl wrote:

If anything, I’m glad you have an open mind to possibly liking Hook in season 3.
To address some similar points, I was re-watching some Hook clips from the finale this morning.
That moment when Bae goes after Hook on the Roger and then Bae ends it with, that Hook’s just like his father — it reminded me of when Henry said to Emma in Manhattan I think, that she is just like Regina because Regina lied to him all the time. Granted, Bae and Henry are kids (although Bae is a bit older than Henry when he said that to Hook) but they both see things in black and white. There is no gray.
Both Hook and Rumpel have a cause they believe so strongly; Hook, his revenge and Rumpel, finding his son. But I really think that time Bae was on the Roger, Hook would have given up his revenge for him. If Bae had given him a chance, which he flat out denied him.
I think the reason why Hook came back, other than finding out that Bae was Henry’s dad, it reminded him of his dad abandoning him and then also realizing, he wasn’t happy with his life. His unhappiness goes back to his speech to Regina in the cave looking for Maleficient.
For some pop culture perspective, Han Solo intended to leave at the end of A New Hope and yet, he came back at the last minute too and helped Luke. I think next season, we will see Hook shine and really become the hero.

Nice reference and given how nerdy A and E are, it’s probably spot on. I posted in another thread that if S1’s theme was Belief and S2’s theme was Repentance (proposed by RaulYbarra) then S3 will be Redemption for Rumple, Regina and Hook. I think those three are going to go through a very intense journey emotionally as characters. At the end of S3 I expect to have very different Rumple’s, Regina’s and Hook’s. Not saying their redemption is complete because it’s a series thing for at least Rumple and Regina, but all three will have reached a new stage in their overall character arc.

May 20, 2013 at 3:22 pm #195528KebParticipantI actually like Hook almost as much as Rumple, and other than how he’s treated Belle and Rumple (the latter with some justification), he’s been the most lovable villain of the show. Maybe it’s just that he’s adorable and has a cute accent, but: he’s not nearly the killer that Regina, Cora, or even Rumple have proven to be (Rumple’s actually not killed a whole lot of people on screen–Regina and Cora have), and isn’t particularly cruel when he does hurt someone–he doesn’t toy with them as Rumple does (he doesn’t even want to stick around to torture the queen), or destroy their happiness like Regina and Cora, and he calls people out on it when they do those things. He returned Aurora’s heart, offered Bae a home (oh no, Rumbelle feels just hit–that’s what Rumple wanted to give Belle…), and he did come back with the ship in the end. He’s definitely as complex as Rumple and Regina, and his shifting alliances are part of that complexity–he shifts both to protect himself and achieve his goals, and out of sympathy with the various parties. And that last bit is what makes him so lovable.

May 20, 2013 at 3:29 pm #195530RumplesGirlKeymasterHe’s for sure the most lovable villain, no where near Cora level of evil. I think I’m in a similar situation as some Hookers. My heart belongs to Rumple, I love him more than any character I’ve encountered in recent TV and because of that it colors everything about OUAT for me. I hated Cora sooooo much not because of how evil she was or what she did to Regina but because she broke Rumple’s heart. While I feel sorry for Hook, at times, I find it hard to see his side because of my Rumple’s love (it’s a sickness guys…a sickness). And while killing Milah was extreme Rumple wasn’t wholly without justification (just like Snow had some measure of justification when killing Cora. Cora would have killed them all, and Milah broke Rumple’s spirit and heart) but Hook shot Belle who is really entirely innocent in all this. She even got Rumple to stop his attack on Hook on his ship. I just…that’s really hard for me to overlook. But I am more open to liking Hook than I was in The Outsider because of his speech to Regina in the mines and because he did come back. And I do think he’s a capable of being a “cuddly” character like I see with Rumple, honestly I just need more of his backstory. That’s what did it for Rumple. Between A Desperate Soul and Skin Deep you see a totally different side to Rumple that changed a lot of people’s opinions about him.
