I feel as though I am very neutral towards Smee. He hasn’t done anything to make me hate him, but I don’t feel any great love for him either. I think they keeping the ONCE Smee very traditional: he’s Hook’s closest confidant but without the bullying/abusive aspect that was often seen in the Disney film.
I don’t like that he locked Belle in the cart in the mines to try and erase her memories, but then I remember that he did leave her the key to try and escape.[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 27, 2013 at 2:10 pm #196260obisgirlParticipant@RumplesGirl wrote:

I think I’m the same too. but I wouldn’t trust him since we’ve seen this season, his loyalties can be easily bought. He’s scared of growing old, which ties in nicely with never aging in Neverland and that desire to never age that essentially becomes his price.
Even though our characters never aged in Storybrooke because of the curse, you almost have to wonder what Smee was like, especially since most of our characters had some semblance of their fairytale lives (Welcome to Storybrooke).

Yeah, why was he working for Moe? How did that happen? How does “finder of rare and valuable objects” translate in Storybrooke?

I always wonder what the cursed selves were like, too bad we didn’t get that for Sheriff Keith and Smee. Too many characters, too little time, I suppose!
As I was typing my post, I see RG just posted the same thing about Smee and Moe I was about to say. Could Maurice have been the source that told Hook about where to find Belle?
I’m not sure why in-story that Hook was confiding in Smee amongst all his crew. Meta-reason is that Smee is a more traditional confidant character for Hook and stands out more than just a random pirate. Yet in this version, Smee is “new” to Hook’s ship and shouldn’t have 2nd in command status, you would think. That “newness” of course lets Smee comment on things that a more seasoned pirate would know about or would know not to speak about (like Milah). So I can see why the writers wanted to use Smee, but within the story it’s a puzzle why Hook isn’t like “Go swab the deck and stop bothering me”. Smee is trying to ingratiate himself by reminding Hook about his revenge, but I also saw Smee as not genuinely being concerned for Hook’s true best interests.
I wonder if Smee might have a larger role to play–just so convenient he finds a bean and has this desire to never grow old. Could Smee be an agent of the HO? I can’t stop seeing conspiracies everywhere in the show!

😯 Never thought about that before, but I really hope not. I already have a very unfavorable view of Moe because he was willing to erase who Belle is in The Crocodile. If he was somehow in communication with Hook in Neverland, that would not sit well with me.

Hmm, my only explanation for that is that Smee was close to the situation in The Crocodile. That’s why he continues to be close to Hook in the finale.

Oh, I have no doubt he’s still looking out for himself. but if I were Smee and I’m stuck in Neverland and can’t grow old — I would find a way to prolong Hook’s revenge against Rumpelstiltskin as much as possible. B/c that’s his one weakness.
May 27, 2013 at 3:34 pm #196274kfchimeraParticipantGood point, Obisgirl–Smee should want to betray Hook if it gets down to leaving Neverland–perhaps that will come into play down the line!

May 27, 2013 at 3:36 pm #196275obisgirlParticipantI’ve had this thought for awhile, because when we see Hook in The Queen of Hearts, he’s alone. Maybe Smee leads a mutiny against Hook and that’s why he returns to fairytale land alone.
May 27, 2013 at 3:52 pm #196281kfchimeraParticipantIsn’t it traditional that Hook’s crew tries to mutiny? He shuts them down pretty fast but they get scared of the dark cabin and refuse to follow orders in the play.

Do you mean Hook returns to FTL alone? Because he couldn’t have. Smee ends up in SB meaning he was in FTL at the time and not protected by the Curse. I thought Hook took Smee to FTL to look for Belle/the way to kill Rumple but got “waylaid” by Regina and Cora without informing his crew. Thus, Smee was a victim of the Curse.
